Gwen arrived at the hospital a little earlier than she expected because she had an appointment at the dentist after visiting Danielle, and if she went earlier she would be able to spend some more time.
She was going to get braces, which was really exciting for her, since she thought her teeth were ugly.
If she was being honest, she used to not care about how her teeth looked, and she knew she needed braces for her own good, but recently she started having that insecurity after her eight year old cousin had once told her that her teeth were weird.
Her parents always told her that she shouldn't care about others' opinions, and that her cousin was small and didn't mean to offend her, which Gwen knew was true since she was too small to know, but maybe her cousin was right...
She sat down on a chair in the waiting room, next to an old woman, who was holding a baby in her hands.
Gwen wondered if it was her grandchild.
Just then, a nurse who seemed a little young to work here, came to her and looked at her sadly.
"She's holding on, but we're not sure if she's going to make it. She's trying her best, we can tell, but it takes too much strength"
The old woman looked down at the baby and then back at the nurse.
"He deserves to have a mother, not his grandmother looking after him. Although I think he is going to be a great boy, no matter what"
"I'm sure. We are doing our best, but cancer is very hard"
"I know. Young girl, thank you for taking care of my daughter. If she doesn't make it, at least we will know that she's in a better place. You have a bright future ahead, my love" the old woman said, smiling.
"Thank you, I will tell you everything that happens, ma'am"
"Of course" she replied before the nurse walked away.
Gwen didn't know that woman, but she hoped she would beat her cancer.
She looked around and saw another woman, this time she looked a lot younger, probably in her twenties.
She was arguing with who Gwen assumed was her boyfriend.
She didn't really hear them because they were almost whispering, avoiding other people hearing them.
She wondered what happened.
Gwen then heard another woman talking on the phone.
She looked at the woman, who looked happy.
She looked young, but not too young. Gwen couldn't make out an exact age.
"Oh my gosh! Sarah, I'm so happy for you! I can't believe my little sister is getting married already!" the woman said excitedly.
"Me either, I'm so excited!" Gwen hardly heard the lady from the other side of the phone.
"Do you guys know where or when the wedding is going to be?" the woman asked her sister.
"We're thinking about celebrating it next year on the beach. Nothing is completely sure yet, of course"
"I wish I could go, honestly. But, unfortunately, I'm saving money for Ellie's school, and I don't think we'll have enough money to visit you guys in France. We estimated that for the cheapest school we'll have to pay 50 dollars a month, and I'm not sure if we'll be able to afford that, since I still can't find a job"
"We know, and that's totally fine! Don't worry, we're going to try to not have a very expensive wedding so we can help you"
"Oh, no! Sarah, you don't have a lot more money than I do, there's no need for anything!"
"I got to go, work call!"
"Of course, bye!" the woman said before hanging up the phone.
"Gwen Jones" Dr. Cooper called, snapping her out of her thoughts.
Unlike last time, today the girl had no idea what to talk about with Danielle.
She hoped an idea would pop up in her mind.
She stood up from her seat and followed the nurse, looking around at other people.
Everyone was there for a different reason.
Every person had a different story.
Gwen wondered what would each one be.
Some would be better than hers, while some would be worse, unfortunately.
They arrived and walked in Danielle's room, who was reading a book.
"We recomended her to read a book, to help her" Dr. Cooper said before turning to the door. "I'll leave you girls alone while I take care of some work"
"Sure" Gwen said as the nurse left and she sat down on the chair that was next to Danielle, who looked up at her.
"Hi" she greeted her friend, before going back to her book.
"Hey, what's up?"
Danielle didn't answer, she was too focused on her book to even hear Gwen.
"Do you want to share anything? Like, something that happened this week, I don't know"
The other girl looked up at her.
"Nothing interesting happened" she replied before going back to her book.
"Look, I know that you just discovered reading, and it seems like you love that book, but I come here once a week. And you can read all the time"
"Sorry" the young girl replied as she closed her book and looked at Gwen.
"It's fine, let's just enjoy the time we have together. When did your mom last visit you?"
"Yesterday"
"And what did she say?" Gwen asked.
"She's sad because I don't remember her. I understand her. I'm really sorry for her, and for you. I can't imagine what you had to go through"
Gwen nodded.
"I just, I- I wish people would stay in my memories. I wish I could just remember everyone. I wish I hadn't forgotten anyone, I wish I never got hit by that car, I wish I was more careful, and- and I wish life was easier" Danielle said as a tear rolled down her cheek.
"I know" the other girl said as she hugged her. "Me too"
