Chapter 3
I had wanted to sleep in till 9 and go see my friends before coming home for a family dinner, However my parents had made me get ready as fast as possible and come downstairs to have some breakfast. I knew that they would make a big deal over today, it was my 18th birthday, and I was finally an adult. I had already completed my morning routine, although today it was slightly different. I didn’t get up and go for a run and come back for a cold, refreshing shower. I skipped it and indulged myself to a warm one. It was a strange feeling stepping into the heat of the shower; I was so used to stepping into the chilly, but refreshing water, which I had stepped into every morning since I was 14. After my body adapted to the new sensation of warm water running through my hair and down my back it had already been 7 minutes. I hopped out and quickly scurried to change into a black and white striped t-shirt and a floral skirt. I applied a little makeup to cover the one blemish I had on my chin and some lip gloss, I combed my hair and tied it in a topknot before running downstairs aware that my parents would scold me on the long shower.
My parents were environmentalists, everything that we had in the house was either environmentally friendly or mine. They despised the way that I liked long showers, so I had for the most part of my life, made the showers cold so that I wouldn’t stay in them too long. However, my fondness of them grew and I ended up liking them nearly as much as warm showers.
As I walked into the kitchen I saw my Gran and Grandad, sitting at the table.
“Nan!” I exclaimed, I hadn’t seen them since I went to London 2 years before. I was planning on going there once I finished my HSC. My Nan and Grandad were the best people I had ever met. I had known them my whole life and couldn’t imagine living without them, or their daily emails to me. I couldn’t believe they were here.
“Skye,” Nan said walking over to me and scooping me into a bear hug, just like she had done when I was 3. “I missed you so much, my dear, look how you’ve grown, and that pimple on your chin,” Of course of all people my Nan could see through my efforts of keeping the blemish hidden under a pile of concealer. “I have a recipe for that you know.” She said before walking to the pantry and pulling out some ingredients and a bowl. I watched for a minute before turning around to my Grandad and hugging him.
“Hello my pumpkin,” he said, looking at me. My Grandad was more like my Dad. He and I had hourly Skype conversations every week, he was always saying that Skype took my name and added a ‘P’ to make it original. In a way, he was the closest male I had ever had in my life. My father was often away on business trips, going to many exotic places. It was almost like I saw more of my Grandad who lived more than 16000kms away from me. The embrace was broken when my Nan came and dabbed the recently made concoction onto my chin.
“When did you get here?” I asked.
“Around 6am,” Nan replied, “And I couldn’t have spent another minute on that blasted plane, the flight attendants were so rude.”
“Wow, that is early” I said, feeling my Grandads hand wrap around my waist and pull me to the chair. As I sat down, I heard my mother yell from the stove.
“Breakfast’s ready,” Mum said in a singsong voice. We were all sat around the table, with an array of different breakfast foods. Eggs, Toast, Bacon, Sausages, Hash Browns, Roast Tomatoes, Pancakes and Juice. I don’t think I had ever seen or eaten so much in my life, And after about an hour, we had finished it all. I heard a knock on the door and ran to get it, I knew exactly who it would be.
