Chapter One

October 13, 1986
The Wheeler House

3rd Person

'Now that I'm here, in Hawkins, I can feel him.' Those words said by Will keep repeating in Mike's head over and over again while staring at his ceiling and laying on his bed. The daylight shining through the blinds of the window fills up Mike's room. He's thinking about everything that has happened these past few months. It's been 7 months since the "incident" with Vecna. The condition Hawkins is in is getting worse by the day. Everytime he looks out the window, he sees cars rushing to get out of this cursed town. El had broken up with Mike a few months ago in April. Mike is still confused as to why El did that but he was understanding of her choice. This made him grow closer to Will though. He finally got to hang out with his best friend more. Best friend. He wasn't sure why those words hurt him. Maybe it was because-

"Mike! Since Nancy's in college I have to drive you now so hurry up!" Mike heard his mom shout.

"Okay, okay! Coming!" Mike responded. Sometimes Mike really missed Nancy because she would always get him to school on time and even get him a drink before going to school. Mike hears the door creak open and yells "I said I'm comin-" He stopped when he saw his little sister, Holly, in her pigtails tied with bright pink rubber bands. "Oh sorry, Holly. What is it?"

"I wanted to say bye bye to you" Holly said holding her arms out waiting for a hug from her big brother.

"Okay. Bye bye, Holly." Mike says as he bends down and wraps his arms around his little sister.

"MIKE!" his mother shouts while dangling her keys.

"Shit! I've gotta go." Mike says as he gets up and waves at Holly. He walks out of his room and runs down the stairs. He hops in the car and can't stop wondering if he should tell his best friend his plan.

Hawkins High School

Will's POV

Another day at school. Ugh. Learning. Seeing people make out literally everywhere. Tons of people smoking. People unsubtly selling drugs. And homework. Lots of homework. This high school is even worse than the one I went to in Lenora. There is one advantage though. Mike. I get to see Mike. My best friend. And my crush since 5th grade. I didn't want to accept it at first but my feelings for him were too strong to the point I couldn't keep lying to myself. Now that El broke up with him maybe I have a chance? Nah. Never in a million years will Mike Wheeler wanna be with me, Will Byers. Never. He's my best friend and I can't ruin our friendship.

"Hey Will! Waiting for Mike?" I hear a voice behind me say. I turn around and I see Lucas. He's in his Hellfire Club shirt. Ever since Eddie...passed.., all of the members wear their Hellfire shirts almost everyday. I always wonder if they even wash it before wearing it.

"Oh hey Lucas. Yeah, I'm waiting for Mike." I respond looking at him.

"I just went to see Max this morning and she's doing great." Lucas smiles at me. I loved hearing that since Max just woke up a few weeks ago and she wasn't doing great at first. But the doctors said at this rate she might be able to get out of the hospital room in a few months. I smile at Lucas.

"Well I'm gonna get to class. See you in a bit."

"See ya!" I wave to Lucas. Ugh. Where is Mike? I know he's always late but he's never this late. I hear the bell ring. Shit. I've gotta get to class. I run to Social Studies.

Mike's POV

I run to Social Studies and slam the door open. The teacher looked at me and said "Late again, Mike?" I apologized and looked around the classroom. There he was. The brown haired shy sweet boy. Will Byers. I walked over to him and sat down on the empty seat right next to him. I couldn't help but smile at the fact he saved a seat for me. I know he does it everyday but it always makes me happy. "Hi," I say to him smiling at his beautiful face.

"Hi," he says smiling back at me.
