Chapter Thirteen

October 27, 1986
California Byers House

(This whole part will be written in 3rd person)

"What if it is true, Jonathan?!"

Jonathan pauses and looks down at his little brother. He understood what he was trying to say completely and even guessed it from the start. Without thinking, he pulled Will into a hug and held him for a while.

"You're not disgusted?" Will says as he pulls away from the hug and looks at Jonathan.

"Why in the world would I be disgusted?"

"Because I'm gay, Jonathan..." Will looks down.

"So? You're still my brother and nothing will ever change that, Will. Seriously. You know that."

"Thank you, Jonathan" Will smiles.

"Besides, I have a friend who's gay too. Wait I think there's a different term if they are a girl who likes girls?"

"Lesbian.." Will mumbles. "Who?"

"I don't know if she wants people to know but you're trustworthy. Her name's Robin. You've met her before. She was with Nancy, Steve, and I at the Wheeler house." Jonathan says.

"Robin?" Will's eyes widen. "Oh."

"You should tell me things like this, Will. I know it's been hard to talk to me, since I've been in college for the past few months, so now that I'm here we should spend more time together."

"Yeah. I've really missed you, Jonathan"

"I've missed you too, Will. Now, tell me how things have been for the past few months," Jonathan wraps his arm around Will's shoulder and pulls him to the couch.

"Michael Wheeler! What the hell?" Nancy bursts through the doors of the principal's office to see her little brother sitting across from the principal. "You got into a fight?!"

"Miss Wheeler. Please sit down," the principal says.

Mike and Nancy walk out the principal's office. Nancy pulls Mike all the way to Jonathan's car.

"Are you going to explain to me, now?" Nancy stares at her little brother.

"I- the principal already did," Mike responds.

"Mike. This is not you. The only time you would get into fights was when Will was missing. There has to be a reason. Did it involve Will?"

"Well," Mike sighs. "There's this girl who bullied El the last time I came here to California and I guess I just let out all the anger now from then get the best of me."

"That's not all, is it?" Nancy raised one eyebrow.

Mike realized there was no point in lying to Nancy because she would find out eventually anyway. He explained what happened to him and Will.

"They said bad things?" Nancy asks. "Like what?"

"They...they called him a..." Mike was so hurt by the word he couldn't say it.

"A what?"

"A fag..." Mike mouths to Nancy.

"Oh. I'm sorry for yelling at you Mike. I didn't know," Nancy apologizes which shocks Mike a bit.

"It's okay, Nance.. I just- I don't even know. I couldn't find Will anywhere and I'm really worried now."

"Huh?" Nancy asks with confusion. "When I went to get the car at home, I saw Will with Jonathan though?"

"Oh..." Mike says clearly upset by Nancy's response.

"Hey," Nancy puts a hand on Mike's shoulder. "I'm sure he'll talk to you soon. He just needs some time. Okay? Besides, you can spend some time with your awesome sister instead."

"Oh? Really?" Mike asks and Nancy nods. "Wow. Thanks, Nancy."

"Anytime, Mike. As much as I hate you sometimes, I'm still your sister and I'm always here to talk," Nancy smiles at her brother as she buckles in her seat belt.

"Where to?" Mike asks.

"We'll decide on the way," Nancy chuckles.
