-ENJOY!!
"When we first met."
Over the long weekend, Nara and I decided to catch up on the series we had been binge-watching. We were engrossed in a heated debate about one of the actors in the show. Nara thought he delivered a standout performance, especially with all the praise he received on Twitter, while I found his portrayal lackluster, making the entire movie feel uneventful.
As we passionately discussed this, we were interrupted by the gentle chime of the door as it swung open, announcing the arrival of a new customer at "Cafe Schmootz." Nara quickly directed our attention to the waiting customer, "Mimi, we have a customer," she said, breaking us away from our movie debate and prompting us to attend to the newcomer.
As always, I greeted the customer with a warm smile, prepared to make my usual introduction. However, to my surprise, he spoke first, looking somewhat uncertain of his surroundings. "Sorry eh......Do you speak English?" he asked tentatively. "Of course," I replied, feeling a sense of joy at the prospect of speaking my mother tongue with someone other than Nara. "What can I get for you?" His face brightened with relief as he let out a significant sigh and smiled at me. "One Oat milk Latte Please with the vegan raspberry muffin," he requested. "Coming right up. Take a seat, and I will bring it to you," I assured him with a smile as he slowly left the counter, carefully considering his options for seating.
It was very early on a Monday morning, and the cafe was deserted. I quickly took my position behind the bar, standing next to Nara, the owner of Cafe "Schmootz" and the lead barista.
As we prepared for the day, Nara leaned in and asked in a hushed tone, "How old do you think he is?" Her gaze was fixed on a man sitting at a corner table, sipping on his coffee. I looked over, intrigued. "Why do you ask?" I responded.
"He's quite attractive, don't you think? Those tattoos give him such a rugged look; I'd guess he's at least in his thirties," Nara mused, her eyes following the man's movements.
"You're being ridiculous," I chuckled, balancing a tray of freshly baked muffins.
"Call me crazy, but I have a feeling that at least one of us will see him again, and you know my feelings are never wrong," Nara declared with certainty. It was true – her intuition had been an integral part of her decision to open the cafe. Her uncanny feelings even led her to play the winning numbers in the lottery, which ultimately provided the funding for the cafe's launch.
I stole one more look at him, trying my best not to appear too obvious. He caught my attention with his enigmatic and somewhat familiar presence. His British accent was unmistakable, although he attempted to mask it with little success. Apart from that, he remained a complete enigma to me.
As I held the tray in both my hands, I approached his side with cautious steps. "Here you go, enjoy!" I offered with a gentle smile.
"Thank you so much," he responded, his eyes meeting mine with a warm smile. His eyes were mesmerizing, the kind that seemed to hold entire galaxies within them. It was as if time stood still as we gazed into each other's eyes, the world fading into the background. Suddenly, the spell was broken by Nara's sneeze from behind the counter. Blushing, I quickly bowed and scurried away, seeking refuge from the somewhat awkward situation.
After sitting for a few hours, he left without looking back. He thanked us for the coffee, but other than that, he didn't engage in any other conversation with us. It's no wonder – we must have looked like psychos giggling behind the counter.
Deep within, a glimmer of hope shone through me, as I fervently wished that Nara's intuition was true. I longed for the possibility of our paths crossing once more in the future.
