"Oh... thanks, Chester."
"You took a really long time to answer the quiz correctly."
"You literally asked me a question in gibberish?" You questioned as he shrugged before walking out of the building. You played with the small metal token in your hands before placing it on display on your wall. It gave you some sense of accomplishment, as every day Chester would come in asking these odd questions to you, waiting for the correct answer.
You only got the first question right because you met the "42" obsessed doppelgänger of Roman, after that, lots of trial and error. You'd been reading up on different, random topics just to appease this stranger. It was honestly a nice side task for you as you tried to sort through the other terrors of life.
Next came Mia, who had a huge grin on her face upon approaching you.
"Come on. Tell me everything." She stated, placing her hands on the counter with excitement.
"Can I have your documents first?"
"Oh, right. Okay." She said, grabbing at her papers and sliding them under the tray. "Formalities." She nodded.
You peered through every number, every small detail. Unfortunately, it was actually her.
"Okay. Nothing happened. We just ate popcorn and watched some show on TV."
"That's all?" She clarified as you nodded. "Hmm. Well, was it fun?"
"I had a great time."
"Did he?"
"He...invited me over again?"
"That seems promising! So why did you stay the night?"
"I feel asleep," You admitted. "He didn't want to wake me, so we just slept on the couch together."
She raised an eyebrow.
"WE DIDN'T-" You defended, before taking in a deep breath as she snickered.
"I know, it was just funny." She grinned. "It seems like you two are getting along. I'm glad, you've been looking more and more depressed as time went on. Not that I don't blame you," She went on, "...but it's nice to see you happier." She finished.
"Thanks, Mia. For everything."
"Of course! That's what friends are for. So, you getting together tonight?"
"I don't know, I still have to ask him. I think he got some overtime, since he's not back yet."
"Oh, that makes sense. I think I saw his truck go by as I was walking back." She nodded. "Well, good luck, Y/N."
You smiled before opening the doors, letting her inside. You shut the doors once more as you waited for the next neighbor or "neighbor" to approach you.
You heard footsteps once more, and your head poked up to see the approaching figure.
"Pfff."
You sighed. "...okay."
The day continued on normally. Each neighbor came in, and each doppelgänger was... actually, you didn't know what they were doing with them. You'd try to lean against the metal screen to listen in, but you couldn't hear anything over the loud alarms. You pondered opening the screen half-way through the "cleaning process", but something always stopped you.
"Cleaning protocol completed. You may continue your job." They mumbled as you nodded with a small wave. "You're good at this."
"Well, I try to be. I have a pretty good motive." You answered. They usually didn't ask questions or go off script.
