The Talk

I froze as I saw the woman standing in my kitchen. The woman I hadn't seen in two years. I dropped the bat and literally flew into her arms as she turned to face me. "CAROL!!!" I shouted, extremely happy to see my mother figure.

She spun me around a couple times then set me on my feet. "How have you been my little firecracker?" She asked with a smile. I loved Carol and even though she isn't my mom she's loved me like I was her own, but she always made sure I knew she wasn't trying to replace my birth mom.

"I've been great! Wanna hear?"

She smiled at me, "I want to hear all about what you've been up to." So I explained everything, starting from two years ago when she left to see the galaxy, to the Cadmus mission Wally, Kaldur, Dick, and I assigned ourselves, to the events from today.

When I finished it was really late but I don't have school for a while so I don't care. "Wow, that's quite the number of adventures you've gotten yourself into," she told me.

"And quite the number of close calls. If the boys hadn't been there I would have been in some serious pickles," I responded, as I got a glass of water.

Carol leaned forward on the table and clasped her hands in front of her face. "So about that crush you had on a certain bird themed teenager," she said suggestively and I went red.

"I seriously regret telling you about that," I sat back down and took a gulp of my drink. "But while we're on the subject, I've been feeling and acting weird around him. It's kinda like before but different. I'm get mad at him for no apparent reason and I can't stop thinking about how much I like his laugh, or voice, or smile, or-or... just him." I gave up trying to describe what I was feeling and dropped my head on the table, deciding to let Carol help me sort it out.

When I looked up at her she was staring at me strangely, like she was trying to confirm something. "Are you feeling mad just whenever or when there's another girl around?"

We've done this before so I knew it was better to answer the questions honestly. "Usually when there's a girl but it doesn't always happen and it doesn't feel like anger, similar but different, I guess?"

"Like you want his attention on you rather than her?"

"Uh huh."

"That's most likely jealousy sweetie, it's normal when you have someone you like," she reassured me.

"Then why can't I get him out of my head? It's almost to the point that I can't focus on what's happening around me."

She nodded, "also common, but I guess not helpful when you're fighting and your powers depend on your ability to concentrate. I think the best thing to do is tell him how you feel, who knows maybe he feels the same way."

I put my hands in my lap and looked at them. "But what if he doesn't?"

"Then he doesn't," my head shot up to look her in the eye, "but that doesn't mean he won't in the future." She stood and walked around the table to give me a hug, that I eagerly returned. "Now," she said as we pulled away, "you're not on a mission and it's passed your bedtime so get upstairs and go to bed."

I groaned and mumbled a complaint, but did as I was told; what can I say I'm a good kid. However by turning my back I missed Carol's concerned look.

Carol pulled out her phone when she knew Eve had fallen asleep and dialed Hal. It didn't take him long to pick up.

"Hello?"

"Hal? We need to talk. It's about Eve."

"... where are you?"
