Chapter 3

"Ugh! leave me alone!" I groaned as I rolled over on the bed and turned off the alarm clock. Yes, I talk, yell, and hit my alarm because this thing is more annoying than Heba. I don't want to get up, because right now my bed and I have the best relationship. Suddenly I remember that this is no ordinary day, it's the first day of school.

"Shit!" I cussed under my breath and shot out of bed. I don't want to be late on my first day of school. I've missed my friends so much because I couldn't see any of them this summer. Most importantly, I want to see Malik. He's one of Ali's best friends and I've liked him since I seriously first saw him. I have no idea why but something about him makes me melt. His dark brown hair complements his brown greenish eyes so well. He's just beautiful. Not only are his looks amazing, but this guy is hilarious. Just listening to him talking to Ali gets me rolling. He should become a stand up comedian, he's naturally funny without even trying. The first time I saw him was at this gathering we had three years ago when everyone got along. His mom is a friend of my mom so he comes often to these gatherings we hold in our house. I never really get a chance to talk to Malik, not because I'm shy, but because I'm not allowed to. If I ever try talking to him and someone from the Arab community sees me, the news will get to my mom faster than on Twitter. Those Arab aunties take whatever chance they get to bust the young when they're doing something they're not supposed to. I think It's actually their job since they have nothing better to do. They should be called the Haram Police.

I swear, I hate mornings. If school starts around 12 pm, I wouldn't mind going. Obviously, whoever created the system thought it's beneficial for students to go to school and comprehend what's going on so early in the morning let alone learn. At 6 am in the morning, I believe It's more beneficial to get sleep.

I rush around the house making as little noises as I can, but failing miserably when I knock down the painting on the wall. Since I wake up earlier than everyone else I need to tip toe around; I don't want to get murdered by my mom. It's not because I need more time to get ready, believe me throwing on an abayya is not that hard; but because I need to tidy up the house before I leave and make breakfast for everyone. I'm not only a servant in this hell hole, but I'm a cook as well.

I make my way towards the kitchen and begin preparing the pancake batter and set up the table. After I finished, I head back upstairs to my room to get dressed. I look around my closet for something that's not black to wear on the first day of school but i had no luck. I'm not even kidding everything is literally black, white, or gray. It depresses me just looking at the clothes. Finally, I decide to wear the long white dress I got the other day. I have to at least find one colorful item. I'm trying to impress Malik, but it's kinda hard when I barley have anything. Oh! I remember, I borrowed something from Yasmeen because her parents actually let her buy clothes that are colorful and pretty. Yasmeen is one of my best friends, we're literally sisters. Leila is my other bestfriend. Her parents are really chill on her though. She can wear whatever she wants, I'm so jealous of their lives, but there's nothing to be done. I can't escape mine.
