CHAPTER 8: SOMEBODY

Emma thought she was used to the Texas summer heat, but that afternoon proved her extremely wrong. Her and Avi were pretty much melting under the relentless heat, which only made her mind race faster as she strived to come up with a plan despite her delirious mind.
It had only been a few days. A few weeks, at most. Yet, not a single living soul remained on the city streets - those monsters didn't count. It was impossible for civilization to fall so quickly. Right? That was all Emma could think. She forced herself to keep her hopes up, for Avi. Things may look hopeless, but they have to get better sometime.

"Emma? Where are you going now? What are we going to do?"

Emma sighed
"I don't know, kid. Maybe the military would come through to aid the survivors soon. But till then we'd have to keep doing things like this. Just focus on walking and stay close to me"

Then Something clicked in Emma's mind. The military! That's what they should be aiming for. She may have been lacking in her job shortly before shit hit the fan, but she was still qualified to help others. To help Avi.
That was it, then. Go back to the base and figure out how she can help attenuate the situation. Avi would be safe there, with other survivors, maybe somehow he could even reunite with his parents. Maybe Emma could reunite with hers. But did they even want to?
Emma pushed those thoughts away. She wasn't a little kid anymore, depending on her parents. But Avi was, and she was responsible for him for the time being. She couldn't afford to fail him too. She couldn't fail anyone, not again.

The two carefully navigate the road of the melting texas.
"Emma! Look!"
Avi shouts, pointing his little finger at a general store
"It's a shop!"

Emma's eyes widened with excitement. Twas probably the best thing she had seen since this shit started. She smiled fondly, probably the first time after a very long time... after Jason died.
"Wow. Good job, kid. You're a quick kid that's for sure".

Emma tilts her head towards the store
"C'mon, let's not waste any more time. Stick close to me"
She began marching towards the store with Avi following her with his little legs, trying to keep up."

Twas not so long when Emma and Avi reached the store. They were standing in front of it.

Avi looks up at Emma, his eyes squinting as the sun rays hits em'
"Will there be anything to drink?"

Emma hears his squeaky voice and looks down at the little guy. She sighs

"I don't know. We will have to see"

GROANSSSSS

Emma's ears perked up as the sound of those hungry monsters hit her ear.
A monster, crawling through the door trying to reach her foot. Half of its body torn apart and its intestines leaking outta it's already dead body like spaghetti.

Emma gasps and her instincts quickly pull Avi behind her and steps back.

Avi looks at the groaning monster

"He's so sad"

"Huh?"

Emma's eyes widened as she heard him.
"What did you say, kid?"
She asked sternly

Avi looks up at her, the sternness in her eyes were enough to make the little guy instantly look down in anxiousness

"I... I.. I'm just saying. He must've been a human too... once.... But now.."

The kid couldn't even complete his sentence and Emma sighs sharply. She looks down at him, reminding herself that he's just a kid. Not only that, he's completely alone with her, a complete stranger. She understood that the kid needed some support. Some kinda hope that things will get better. Even if twas a false. But she couldn't do that. Not after what happened at the house, how they barely made it out. Running up to the roof, so many of those damn monsters at once, holding the door close, jumping from roof to roof with a 7 year old. Just thinking about all that gave her goosebumps. Plus the memory of jason.... Made her so damn mad at the monsters. She sighs deeply and kneels down to Avi's level, keeping her eyes locked on the monster
