CHAPTER 10: LOST

Emma and Avi were walking down the highway, relieved yet cautious at finding no bloodthirsty monsters roaming around. It was just them, walking around with their bags of food and supplies on their shoulder, feeling the sun's warmth on their skin and the only sound hitting their ears were the birds chirping and their own footsteps.

Emma wouldn't stop looking out for the undead, but none were in sight, which stirred a feeling of both anxiety and surprise after the series of close calls in the past few days. She looks down at Avi walking beside her.

"Do you need anything?"

Emma spoke in a neutral yet concerned tone. Avi shakes his head and continues to walk with his head hanging down.

Emma nods and continues to walk. She puts her hand in her pocket and pulls a cigarette and lights it up with a match. She takes a puff and speaks again.

"You know, if the bag is too heavy for you, you can give it to me."

Avi shakes his head again and keeps on following Emma's footing. After a while of walking silently, Avi spoke with his voice just above a whisper.

"Emma?"

"Yeah?"

"Why did you scare them away?"

Emma sighs, knowing that Avi is referring to the two people who took Avi and dropped him off to her.

"Well... for one they took you away."

"But..you took me too..?"

"That was different, kid. I was saving you." Emma sighs. "You know it's funny, you thought I was a kidnapper when I was saving you. But these people who really kidnapped you, you wanted to be with them."

Avi looked down with a small sense of conflict on his face. Emma sighs and takes another puff.

"Look, I... I don't know, kid. It's just that..." She sighs again. "Listen, I'm dealing with some problems myself and...sometimes I don't even know what is going on, or what am I doing...I just-"

Emma looks at Avi, realising that he's probably not getting it.

"Just.. Ignore what I said, kid." She snubs out her cigarette before tossing it away.

They both continue to walk, passing trees after trees. The day was going oddly peacefully. The only thing in front of them was the abandoned highway. There weren't any monsters in sight, only cars. Some crashed, some completely totaled and some just sitting there with their corpses in them.

They walk close to one of the surrounding cars. Emma peeks inside, only to find more dead bodies. Some looked like families while some looked like casual buddies getting drunk together. And driving. No wonder they're dead.

"Eww! The smell! It's bad!"

Avi gagged, covering his little nose with his small hands. The dead corpses sitting there fills the air with the awful smell of their rotten flesh and blood.

Emma sighs as she too covers her nose.

"Let's just keep walking," Looking back at the corpses with disgust. "Hey, you good?"

Before Avi could reply, he pukes.

Emma sighs deeply yet again as she rubs his back.

"There there, you're okay. Now, let it all out."

Avi finishes puking and wipes his lips. He looks down with his legs trembling and his breath stinking. Emma reaches her bag and takes out a bottle of water.
