CHAPTER 9: OTHERS
—---------------------
“Are you serious right now?”
A high-pitched voice Avi didn’t recognize at all pierced his ears when he had barely regained his senses. He whimpered in response to the hurtful noise, and was followed by another new voice.
“Oh, great, now he’s awake. Sirens are about to go off...”

Before he could even make sense of his vision, the backpack Avi carried was promptly taken from him. He did the only thing he could to protest in that situation; wailed incessantly.
“Told ya.” The snarky male voice snapped again.
“It was your idea to bring him here! How could you even… why… ugh!” A little girl groaned back at him. Avi couldn’t make much sense of the situation; though the owner of the voice should barely be much older than himself, she spoke in a mature and bossy tone, like she was talking to a disobedient dog rather than a much older man.
The boy opened his eyes and was immediately met with the bratty girl’s own displeased stare glaring back at him; she had fair skin, curly brown hair and round hazel eyes that widened upon meeting his. The vision was so confusing that Avi immediately paused in his crying and stared back at the girl.

“This is bad. This is really bad. What do we do?”
The pair argued like Avi couldn’t hear them, so he glanced over to the owner of the snide voice; a man in his mid-twenties at most, of tan skin, messy brown hair and hazel eyes matching the girl’s, but shaped in such a way that Avi felt like he could read the boy’s entire life with just one glance. He was too focused, however, on digging through the kid’s backpack. He tried to whine in protest, but neither paid any attention to him.
“Take his stuff. Duh.”
“After that, genius.”
“Toss him out. Not our problem.” Avi’s heart skipped a beat as he realized what the young man’s words meant.
“Are you out of your mind?!”
“Please don’t hurt me! Please!” Avi interrupted their bickering with a shriek.
Immediately both pairs of eyes turned to him with puzzled looks, as if they weren’t expecting him to even be capable of speaking. The girl opened her mouth before the man could react.
“We won’t. I won’t let him, don’t worry.” She shot a deadly glare at her companion. He rolled his eyes in response. “I’m Bianca. I’m so sorry you’re in this mess, I know it’s really scary, but…”
“No time for that shit, Bia. Here, try this on, I think it’s your size.” The sneering guy tossed her a hoodie from Avi’s backpack. He grabbed it before it reached the girl’s lap.
“That’s mine!” Avi shouted, tears rolling down his cheeks.
“No, it’s my sister’s now. Give it to her.” The man shot him a threatening glare, but Avi didn’t budge.
“Balaam, shut up.”
“I’m trying to guarantee our survival here, Bia.”
“It’s a fucking hoodie, Balaam! And we’re in Texas! In August! I don’t fucking need it!” Bianca yelled at him. No one dared to break the silence after her stern shouts.
