Evyn's pov
I'm heading to Spain tomorrow for the launch of my new branch. It's gonna be a big event, a prime spot for business deals. All the big shots will be there—CFOs and CEOs from my company and Viotto Group Ltd.
Being the only heir is exhausting, with all the responsibilities, and even though I have a sibling, it's still a struggle because I'm the eldest. Not that I need anyone else—Sarah's enough for me.
Speaking of Sarah, she's coming with me. The new branch opens in two weeks, but I have to check on my German branch as Ace promised. It's been doing great lately, so it's time to keep my word.
I'll take my sunshine with me tomorrow, be with her for the next two weeks, then head to Spain just before the opening, set everything up in a week, go back to Germany, and bring Sarah home. I know she doesn't like being there, and who would, in her situation?
I've gotta look out for her, and even him. He's bound to pull something that'll get on her nerves, and yeah, it'll piss me off too. He better keep his stupidity in check for those two weeks, or I'll kick his ass.
I closed my computer and glanced around the office. Everyone's gone, even Ms. Klen. Tomorrow's the weekend, and they'll be taking a break—they've been putting in overtime because of my Spain project.
I headed downstairs; running a car business, it'd look odd if I didn't drive my own car, plus I love driving. It's past 7 P.M. and NYC is lit up like fallen stars, so I hopped in my car. My office is in Stamford, so it's gonna take some time to get home, and there's always the traffic to deal with. I buckled up, turned on the radio, and started the engine.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed—it's a post from Sarah: 'Nice day. I wish all the days could be like today.' I know she's bummed about tomorrow. I checked out the pic—her and her friends, young and pretty. She's always talking about them.
From what I remember, there are three of them, but only two in the pic besides her. She's always going on about them, but I can never keep their names straight.
Finally, I made it into Manhattan. Typical, hit a red light. I hate these. At least my playlist is solid—nice song playing.
🎶
"What the hell is this?" I snarled. Good thing the windows are up. A paper flew into my car from somewhere.
I grabbed it and started reading.
Checklist
Things to do:
• Best way possible for Elysium. ' What the hell? Is this person stalking me?'
• Learn new Java coding. 'Who is this person?'
• Buy a peephole camera. 'Why would anyone need this?'I glanced out the window and spotted a woman frantically searching for something. Must be hers. She's got this book, same design as the paper. Dark, silky hair and these small hands clutching it like she's guarding a treasure.
I glimpse her profile—deep brown eyes that seem carved, perfect face with this intense look. She's worried, maybe about who might find that paper she lost. The bus pulls away, and it's like she takes a piece of my heart with her.
I thought it was just the song messing with my head, so I killed the music. Otherwise, my heart might've jumped out and landed in my hands.
Damn, I wish I could see her again. She was gorgeous, cute even. And for the first time, I hated that green light signal. I drove home.
Got cleaned up, threw on my PJs. Already ate at the office, so no need to chow down again. Perfect excuse to dodge Mom.
Knock at the door. No prizes for guessing who. I opened it.
"As expected, 'Evy, dinner's ready.'"
"Mom, ate at the office." I lied.
"Oh, then relax, sleep early. Flight tomorrow, check if you need anything else." 'Yes, Mom. That girl, though. I really want to find her.'
"No nothing, I guess." I kept sighing.
"Evy, what's with the face? You feeling okay? Don't go if you're not. It's still two weeks away."
"Mom, I'm good. Go eat, get some rest. Night." After closing the door I fell on the bed thinking about her. Mom told me to take it easy, but truth is, I wasn't in the mood for anything.
I glanced at that paper again. Looks like she's with one of my companies, but she seems so young. Must be interviewing or something.
Mom's reminder about the flight hit me hard. I felt a pang of homesickness and almost wanted to skip it. Good thing she's in my company.
Looking at that checklist, I muttered to myself, "I'll find you."
Then I remembered Sarah. She's out somewhere, and I should make sure she's okay or go pick her and her friends up.
I dialed her number. "Hey, Eve?"
"You at the dorm?" I asked.
"Yeah," came her tired, sleepy voice.
"You sound beat, like you walked there."
She chuckled. "Yeah, walked from the bus stop."
"What?" I blurted out, thankful my room's soundproof.
"Sarah, why didn't you call me? I could have picked you up from wherever you were. You took the bus?" I tried to sound calm, though I was really worried.
"Bro, chill. Char, Hae, and Ash were with me," she replied.
"Who are they?" I asked.
"My friends and roommates," she shouted back.
"Who's Ash, then?"
"Ashley. Seriously, you haven't been paying attention to my posts?" She sounded exasperated.
"I did see them, but there were only two people in the picture," I defended.
"The one in the pink dress is Ash, the one in yellow is Charlotte, and I'm in blue," she explained.
"And the other one?"
"She's the one taking the photo. Should I hire a professional photographer just for Instagram?"
She had a point there.
"So, what time did you all get to campus?" I asked.
"Around 8:30, I think," she replied.
The bus they arrived on was the same one I saw her on. I can't ask Sae about her now; I'll have to wait until tomorrow. It's such a stroke of luck. When I saw Sarah's post, it struck me that these people don't even compare to her in beauty. They're all youthful, but she stands out—looking tired and worried right to the end, from what I saw.
I wish I could see her every day, but sadly, I'm off to Spain the moment I noticed her. Maybe she's a university student—not much younger than me, not a minor, just right.
Turning off the lights, I lay down and wished to God that Sarah might know something about her.
