Chapter 3: The Calm before the Storm

It has been a couple weeks since Vera began secretly taking care of the captured dragons and the wounded night fury. During those couple weeks, Vera had slowly earned the trust of the female night fury and the four captured dragons, who she has all named, and because of this she had learned some things about dragons that helped her during dragon training, for example, the spot on the chin under that instantly puts dragons asleep when you scratch it, but because of these tricks, Vera unknowingly become one of the top recruits in training and unknowingly made herself popular in her village.

That night, Vera was about to leave the house to sneak off into the arena after accidentally winning the honor to kill the Stormcutter in front of the village, which was something Vera didn't want at all, but when she was about to walk out the front door, she heard her father's voice behind her.

Vera's Father: Vera.

Vera turned around to find her dad seemingly waiting for her by the fireplace downstairs.

Vera: ( nervously: ) Oh, hi, Dad! W-What's going on?

Vera's Father: You've been keeping secrets.

Vera: I-I have?

Vera's Father: How long did you think you could hide it from me?

Vera: I, Uh-

Vera's Father: How long did you think you could hide the fact that you are a dragon fighter from me?

Vera looked at her father with slight surprise and relief to knowing that he doesn't know about how she was doing so well at training.

Vera's Father: ( with a smile: ) For Thor's sake, Vera, if I knew that all you needed to change from the worst viking our village have ever seen to one of the top two in training, was those gloves! I would've gotten you a pair from the moment you could walk. Odin, it was rough, I almost gave up on you. And this whole time you were holding out on me and your mother. Thor all mighty! With you doing so well in the ring, you are finally bringing honor to the Lokson family name. Oh, speaking of bringing honor to our family name, make sure to not be late for dinner at the Main Hall. There's going to be a huge surprise for you in honor of you winning the chance to kill a dragon in front of the village.

Vera: A surprise? Ah, okay...? I, uh, gotta go, ah, train b-before tomorrow-

Vera's Father: Oh, of course. Don't let me get in the way. Remember, come to the main hall for dinner.

Vera: ( with a nervous smile: ) I-I will be t-there.

( Slight time skip )

Vera and Estrella, the female night fury, went inside the arena while everyone in the village was going to the Main Hall with the baskets of fish Vera had stolen from the food storage house. Estrella was slowly catching up with Vera while carrying a basket on her back as the night fury was still getting use to walking on three legs. As soon as the two got inside the ring to the cells, the young speed stinger roared happily in response to seeing the two, alerting the three other captured dragons that their human friend and the three legged night fury had came with food.

Vera: ( to the young Speed Stinger: )Hey, Firecutter! How about you come on out and let your siblings out so you all can eat together as a family, bud.

The young speed stinger, now revealed to be named " Firecutter ", quickly used the stinger on his tail to pick the lock of his cell door and he opened it with a push of his head, before he ran to the other three dragons' cells and unlocked their cell doors while Vera placed down the five baskets of fish, before he ran to Vera and Estrella with a huge smile on his face.

Vera: ( To Firecutter, with a smile as she placed down a basket of fish in front of the young speed stinger and tipped it over for him: ) Good job, boy. You're really getting a claw on picking those locks with that stinger of your's. Eat up.

Firecutter quickly made a happy roar in response before he began eating the fish from his basket. The Shovelhelm then walked over to Vera and gently nudge her side, asking for pets, which she happily gave.

Vera: ( to Shovelhelm, as she petted his head: ) Hello, Puds. Sorry for me and Estrella not getting here a bit late. My dad side tracked me for a few minutes. There's some tasty rocks inside one of the baskets waiting for you, and don't worry, Estrella eel checked it.

The Shovelhelm, now revealed to be named " Puds " purred happily in response to Vera's pets before he went to eat the rocks and fish inside the basket beside Estrella, who tipped it over for him before she started eating out of her basket of fish.

Vera took a step back as the Silver Phantom flew to her before he nuzzled his head against her cheek in a greeting.

Vera: ( to the Silver Phantom, with a smile as she booped his nose: ) Hello to you too, SkyFalcon. Now, go eat before Firecutter steals some of your fish. Estrella and I got your favorite today, salmon.

SkyFalcon quickly flew to the basket of fish beside Firecutter as soon as he heard that his favorite kind of fish was inside.

Vera then watched with a smile as the Stormcutter walked out of her cell and walked to the human girl before she gently brushed the hair away from the girl's face with the claw of one of her upper wings while purring at the girl greetingly.

Vera: ( to the Stormcutter: ) Hey, GlimmerSpring. Don't worry, I'm thinking of a plan to get all five of us out of this situation tomorrow. You're not going to die tomorrow, none of us are. Now, go eat, you beauty.

The Stormcutter who was now revealed to be named " GlimmerSpring " calmly gave Vera a nod before she went to eat with the other dragons.

As Vera watched the five dragons eat, Estrella looked up at her and gave her a worried look with a small whine.

Vera: ( knows what the night fury is worried about ) ( calmly, to Estrella: ) Don't worry, girl. I'm sure this " surprise " that's waiting for me at the Main Hall isn't something crazy like a, I don't know, a courting proposal.

Estrella and the other dragons quickly gave Vera looks of confusion in response, Firecutter even cutely tilted his head to the side while holding a fish in his mouth.

Vera: Oh, right. You probably don't know what a courting proposal even is. Well, in this village, it's tradition that if a guy or sometimes girl wants to date someone, they would present the person they wish to date with a flower that they thinks represents the relationship they could have as a way to ask if they could court they girl or guy. Anyway, like I said, the surprise is probably something else, because I know that no guy my age around here would be interested in me like that or at all in general.

The four adult dragons shared worried glances when Vera left the arena to start heading to the Main Hall, while Firecutter calmly went back to eating as he was too young to understand what the four adult dragons were so worried about.
