Averie's POV
"I got it, I got it!" I shout excitedly as I pull the straps of Meredith's carrier onto my shoulders. She's heavy, and it makes me stumble a little as I feel the full weight of her. I reach to grab Olivia too, but Mr. Greg stops me.
"I got this one. We can help each other. I don't know where to put them. Do you think you could show me?" Mr. Greg suggests as Taylor and Daddy have another conversation on the other side of the car. They've been having a lot of adult conversations recently. I think they're talking about moving or me, but I'm not too sure. I nod and start walking toward the plane steps. I grasp the straps of the backpack and try my best not to fall over again.
By the time I make it to the stairs, I'm tired. Why is Meredith so big? Maybe she's having too many treats? I'll have to tell Taylor to cut back on the treats. She wouldn't be so hard to carry if she was a baby. Why doesn't anyone have any baby animals?
"Easy there," Mr. Greg helps steady me as I try to climb the stairs.
"She's so heavy," I whine.
"I can carry her too," Mr. Greg suggests, but I want to help too.
"No, no," I frown, "I'm super strong, see!" I show him my arm muscles.
"Wow, you are super strong," Mr. Greg chuckles.
"Yep," I huff, taking another step up to the plane. I wonder where Taylor and Daddy are. They said they'd help unload, but it seems like all they do is angrily talk now.
"How about I just give you a little lift?" Mr. Greg suggests.
"No, I'm a big girl, like my mummy said!" I protest. I can do this, even if it's super hard. If only Meredith was a baby cat, it would be so much easier.
"What about this?" Mr. Greg offers again, probably seeing how red my face was from all the huffing and puffing. Suddenly, the weight is much lighter, even though I'm still holding the backpack. It's like Meredith's weight is almost gone.
"Okay!" I agree and hurry up the plane steps. We're flying back to Nashville now. We're all done in LA. I'm not even sure why we came here because it was a very short trip.
I helped Mr. Greg get the kitties on the plane and strapped in. Each backpack has a special place to sit. Mr. Greg said I have to wait on the plane while he gets everything else ready. I run up and down the aisle because I can. No one is here to yell at me. I could probably jump on the seats, but they'd see me through the windows.
I'm on my third lap and have decided to put all the pillows in one big pile so I can land on them. I climb up on the seat and get ready to take flight for the second time when I hear a familiar shout, "Averie!" I turn to see a frustrated Taylor standing in the doorway.
I should probably mention it's very early in the morning. Taylor wanted to fly early so we'd be in Nashville by midday. I don't know why that matters, but I'm guessing it means she didn't sleep a lot. She seems very grumpy today. She's wearing a frown like she's angry or worried about something.
I slept in my own bed last night, so I don't know when the adults went to bed. I still get nightmares, and they can be really scary, but I know I can go to their room and see that they're okay. They don't even lock the door anymore. Some nights, I have trouble going back to sleep, so I wake them up, or I go play with the kitties. Last night, I played with the kitties in my room. They don't even know we had a whole talk about who Taylor's favorite is. It's me!
