L II (L The Second)

(Light POV)

Light's breath was caught in his throat. How did he...or she...damn it, they know? No, don't let them know you're surprised.

"Call me N. I'm the leader of the SPK."

N... Is he mocking L?

"Number two? I'm afraid you're mistaken," Light says.

"Cut the act. We already know the real one's dead," the distorted voice says.

We? "Is there multiple people?" Light asks.

"Yes."

Light rests on that answer. "We also have multiple people," he reveals.

"As if it wasn't obvious enough."

Light grits his teeth. No.. I'm not letting this wannabe L get to me.

"Are you aware of that there is a fake rule in the Death Note?"

Light widens his eyes. How did they.. Just who is this kid?

Ryuk snickers behind him. "Seems like you've been caught," he says.

"From my knowledge, there can't be a fake rule. They've all been written by the Shinigamis themselves," Light says.

"Yes, but don't you think it's possible that Kira or one of the side users told the shinigami to write this rule?"

"Yes...but the shinigamis seem too stubborn to do something like that if they don't gain anything from it."

The call is silent for a moment.

"You could have a point," N says. "But I would appreciate if you listened either way."

Guess there's no backing out. "Of course. Let's hear it."

"There were a few rules I was suspicious of, but the main one I suspect to be fake is the 13-day-rule."

"Ooh~ Right on the dot!" Ryuk exclaims.

"And why do you think that?" Light asks.

"It seemed to stand out the most. If Kira knew these rules were fake, they could be used to his advantage."

"I understand what you mean."

"Do you really? What I've concluded is that in the case of a confinement, Kira could've had his Shinigami write this rule so that he could be proved innocent." 

Just who is this kid?

"If N is right, then that means Light and Misa's confinement would've been useless," Aizawa states.

"But, wait! If that was true, then how come we caught Higuchi doing the killing?" Matsuda reasons.

"That's true. So then why would the rule be added?" Ide asks.

"Has anybody ever been confined during your investigation?" N asks.

"...yes," Light responds, "but when we caught Higuchi, we were able to clear both of them."

"But there's always a chance that..." N sighs. "Why do I bother? The Japanese Task Force isn't very useful now. I'll return when I need you again."

The call ends.

That damn kid. He's using us like we're just some extra people to reach out to. He thinks that he's the orchestrator. No biggie. Once he and Mello are dead, I'll just kill the Task Force so that they'll be nothing in my way.

(Mello POV)

Both Sayu Yagami and Soichiro Yagami got away. I told Near all he needed to know about that fake rule. Knowing Near, he's probably connected the dots and realized that the new L is Kira.

"Matt," Mello calls out, "what info have you gotten on Light's third girlfriend?"

"I had to retreat. She started calling someone."

"Damn you, pussy," Mello angrily says.

"Yeah, yeah. Call me what you want. Why're you so worried about her anyways?"

"I need a new bait. She seems to have some purpose in the Task Force. Don't you notice how all the well known women are somehow connected to this man? He's engaged to Misa Amane, that idiotic actress who can't use her head for shit, and he's dating Kiyomi Takada, Kira's new spokeswoman. Now he's with that fashion icon, Tadomi. See a pattern?"

"Wow..."

"Of course, this all an assumption. But... it's very likely that she may also be involved with Kira too. That would point all fingers towards Light Yagami."

"So he's Kira. Case closed."

"Nope."

"No?" Matt says confusingly.

"I don't have enough evidence against him. I need solid proof, not just assumptions."

"But he's clearly Kira!"

"If people went off assumptions and personal thoughts, the judicial system would be more fucked up than it already is."

"So, what's the plan?"

Mello raises his arm. "Kidnap and torture all three of the women until they break. Though, Amane's likely useless. Leave her. We'll kidnap Takada and Tadomi."

"When?"

"At the New Year's Music Festival. That's our best chance of getting them all together."
