Kenzie's POV
I get home around four in the morning. I'm heading up the stairs to my apartment when I hear a hiccuping sob.
I cautiously turn the corner, waiting for whoever's there. I see Maddi stumbling through her doorway, a bottle of Tequila in her hand.
"Maddi!" I exclaim, reaching for her arm. She turns to me, her green eyes bloodshot. Her mascara is running down her cheeks, and her hair's in a tangled mess.
"Kenzie?" She asks. I nod and point to her hand.
"How many of those have you had?" I ask her.
She shrugs miserably. "I don't know. Maybe seven or eight. I did have some Vodka, though."
I pry the bottle out of her grasp and toss it over the railing. "Why?" I ask softly.
She opens her mouth to say something, then bursts out in tears. She presses her back to the wall and slides down until she's in a sitting position.
"Maddi, what happened?" I ask crouching down next to her.
"He's not here. He's gone. He's gone." She sobs.
"What? Who's gone?" I sit next to her and wrap one arm around her shoulders.
"They cast him out and now he's gone." She presses her palms into her eyes. "He's gone."
"Maddi, you have to tell me who." I squeeze her shoulder.
"It's my fault! I'm too damn curious, and I couldn't just stay put-"
"Maddi! You're not making any sense! What's going on?" I cry.
"I'm horrible, Kenzie! I'm a monster and I'm horrible!" She exclaims, clenching her fists.
I sigh, realizing that I'll never get answers out of her when she's drunk.
"Come on. I'm taking you into my apartment, okay? I don't want you hurting yourself." I pull her up by under her arms and lead her into my apartment."I'm gonna let you have my bed, alright?" I say. "You can stay here until you're better."
"Why can't I just die?!" She wails, clutching my shirt in her hands. "It would be so much easier if I were allowed to die!" She continues to sob, but she lets me drag her into my room. I push her under the covers, and she grips them tightly with her hands.
She reminds me of a small child, scared of things that aren't real.
I notice a small mark on the inside of her arm, right above her elbow. It's a feather, and it's falling apart.
"What's this?" I ask, reaching out to touch it. Maddi pulls a way defensively.
"Don't touch it! It's horrible!" She cries. "I don't want it to hurt you!"
I don't see how a tattoo could hurt me, but I back away anyway.
"Alright, Maddi, goodnight." I turn off the lights and leave her to cry herself to sleep.
Luke's POV
As I lie in bed, I listen to the screaming coming from upstairs. It sounds like someone's in pain. Not physically, but emotionally. She's screaming something about monsters and being taken away. I can't understand half of what she's saying.
I hope she finds what she's looking for. Just as I hope to find the girl I love.
~
The next morning, Calum wakes me up.
"Luke!" He exclaims, bursting through my door.
"Go away." I mumble, burrowing under my blankets.
