MICHAEL'S POV
I sigh and walk back over to Kenzie. "I'll tell you. Okay, we just-" I wipe my sweaty palms on my jeans. "Um, I-"
She notices how nervous I am and steps closer to me. "Mike, are you okay?"
"Yeah. I-I'm fine." This is something I've been dreading- what if she doesn't believe me? What if she thinks I'm a psycho and stops talking to me altogether?
Calum is still murmuring comforts to Ally in the living room, and Calum looks over at me questioningly.
"Kenzie?" I ask.
"What?"
"Can we...um, can we talk about this in my apartment?" I shove my hands in my back pockets and chew on my lip.
"Uh, I guess." She opens the door and follows me out.
We take the stairs down to my apartment and I flip on the lightswitch as we step in.
"Do you wanna sit down? I'll get a few Dr. Peppers..."
"Michael, please stop avoiding your explanation." She says with big, tired eyes. "I just want to know why your friend is having a panic attack on my couch."
"But, it's not just anything. It's so much..." I sigh and sit next to her. "It's...please, just promise you'll hear me out. Please don't think I'm insane."
Her eyes widen and she scoots away. "W-what?"
"No, no...it's not...it's not like that." I tell her.
"Okay." She says suspiciously.
"Okay..." I hang my head. "Well, I know you just met me last week, but...I mean, I've known you for, like, nine years."
She stands up. "What in the actual hell is that supposed to mean? Are you some kind of...some kind of stalker?!" She shouts.
I cringe. "Oh, God, no! That came out so wrong!"
"Well, what do you mean?" She shouts.
"I mean, I'm your fucking Guardian Angel and I'm only here to keep you safe! I didn't know that Luke and Ally were going to tag along, I didn't know that motherfucking Satan was going to show up-"
"Woah, woah!" She puts her hands up as if to stop my words. "What?!" She looks at me with wide eyes. "Guardian angel? Satan? What in God's name are you telling me?"
I drop my head into my hands. "I mean, I used to be up there," I half-heartedly look up to the ceiling. "Watching over you...but I messed up. Technically, I'm not supposed to watch over you anymore...hell, I'm not even supposed to be on Earth."
She sits down next to me, overcome with shock. "Wait. You," She points to me. "Were an angel?"
I nod meekly.
"Then, why are you here?" She asks softly.
"Um..."
"Who is Ally? I mean, how did you know her? And who is Luke?" She puts her hand on my leg, excited for answers.
"Ally...Ally is an angel. She got permission to come down to Earth somehow. Luke and I are fallen angels. We were cast out of heaven." I absentmindedly rub my fingers over my Marking.
Kenzie's eyebrows draw together. "Wait. Why were you and Luke cast out?"
I sigh. That's the question I've been dreading. "Well, we both fell in love with someone we weren't supposed to. Luke tried to communicate with said lover, and he got caught. He was thrown out. Simple."
"Who did you fall in love with?" She asks obliviously.
"My assignment." I whisper after a minute of silence.
"Your assignment...so, the person you were Guardin- oh." Her cheeks flush and she looks away.
"Kenzie, I didn't really want it to be like this, but-"
"No, I just...I don't want to- um..." She scratches the back of her neck. "Why is Ally freaking out?"
I sigh again. "There's someone who rules over the demons and keeps the fallen angels in check. She's the Queen of Hell-"
"So, pretty much Satan?"
"Yeah." I laugh dryly. "And, basically, Ally saw her while we were at the mall. She was next to her in the reflection of the mirror, but she wasn't physically there. She plays with your mind..."
"What's her actual name?" Kenzie asks quietly.
"Savannah...why?" I look at her for the first time since we began talking.
"Um, I had a friend that I took care of when she was drunk...she kept yelling and crying and the name Savannah was mentioned plenty of times."
I fall silent and my mouth drops open. We're in even deeper shit than I thought.
"Why is she after us?" Kenzie plays with the strings on my ripped jeans.
I watch her for a minute. "Well, basically, the reason I was assigned to you is because something really bad happened to you. They had to erase your memory and start you over, and they had to assign you a new Guardian because the other one knew too much, apparently."
"What happened to me? Was this, like, in a past life?" She looks so confused that I feel bad.
"Um, I don't know what happened to you. No one does, except the Council...and, yeah, it was a past life. All I know is that as soon as I became an Angel, they assigned me to you. I don't know what happened to me before I was an Angel."
She shakes her head, confused. "Wait. So, you used to protect me, and watch everything I did from your little crystal ball or whatever in Heaven?"
I laugh. "No. I was here, with you, but you couldn't sense my presence because I was an Angel."
"Okay. So, why is Savannah after us?"
"I was thrown out, etc. etc. I was supposed to stay in Hell, but I snuck up to meet you. I wanted to protect you, because I think Savannah knows something about your past that we don't. I think she wants to hurt you...
And, because I left, she'll probably be after me, too. She's supposed to bring me back to Hell, along with Luke.""What about Ally?" She presses a hand to her forehead.
"Um, Ally had permission to be here...so, I'm not sure why Savannah chose to go after her." My head is spinning with questions now. I'm hoping Kenzie doesn't ask anything else, because I can't even answer my own questions.
"So, we're all being hunted by Satan and probably her demons, all because you and Luke couldn't control yourselves?"
I pause before nodding slightly.
"I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm flattered. But, you pretty much just sentenced us all to death." She stands up again and I stand with her.
"No, I was protecting you...and this would've happened anyway. There's no stopping it-"
"Are you saying that my backstory is fucked up and I'm pretty much Satan's little play thing?" She asks softly, looking hurt and terrified.
"Yeah- well, I mean-"
"No, that's all. That's it." Tears start to fill her eyes and I can tell she's trying to stop them from spilling over.
"Thanks for telling me." She whispers sadly before walking out the door.
