The statue of Dream was gone.
"I'm not surprised that the Star Sanses would relocate Dream after we got you..." Cross said quietly.
"...why does this bother me so bad...? " I muttered.
"Dream is...the boss's brother. I would..." Horror went quiet for a moment. Probably gathering his thoughts. No one interrupted as he continued. "...guess that...you feel some sort...of similar connection."
I looked at Horror. "That helps me make some sense of this place... But...I feel like Dream would know something about what happened to me...er, to Nightmare."
"Possibly to you, too." Dust added.
"I...guess."
"As much as I would like to take a stroll through the death and decay, the Star Sh*ts might come back, so we should probably head home." Killer said after a moment of silence, his knife still in his hand. He seemed a little more relaxed, though, as he threw the knife up into the air and caught it again a few times.
I shifted uneasily, not looking at any of the skeletons. "Do you still want me to follow you guys around? I know I'm not Nightmare, so I dunno if you guys..." I trailed off.
"Even if you're not the boss, you're essential to the balance." Dust spoke, his hands in his pockets.
"Balance? "
"We can explain it back home." Cross spoke next, still holding the large red knife. He turned away, once more slashing through the air and making a portal. They all went through, and I took one last look at the large tree stump, feeling a sense of sadness before I, too, went through the portal.
It was a familiar dark space, and I realized it was the same space I'd been pulled into by Cross previously.
"I'll go...make food since...I won't be...helpful in explaining...anything." Horror said slowly before walking off.
I tilted my head slightly as he walked off. Cross noticed my confusion. "Horror makes us eat after any battles with the Star Sanses. While we don't necessarily NEED to eat, it heals us. And he's a pretty good cook."
For the first time, I smiled softly. I looked at Cross as he led the rest of us in a different direction. "Did you guys not eat after the previous battle with them? "
Dust shook his head. "No. We didn't eat because we were too worried about the boss."
"So...the balance. There's two of them." Cross began explaining. "The balance of creation and destruction, and the balance of positivity and negativity. The Star Sanses are aware of the first one, but they seem ignorant to the second."
"More like they don't believe it exists." Killer grumbled.
"Ink is the god of creation. Well, he's more like the protector of the creations than he is of creation itself. He sometimes makes AUs, but not usually. Error, on the other hand, is the god of destruction. When the multiverse starts to crowd up from too many AUs, he destroys some. This balance used to handle the balance of positivity and negativity pretty well, but since Ink and Error teamed up and made a creation-destruction pact, positivity started to overbalance the scale of the second balance. The balance of positivity and negativity is the lesser balance that needs to be maintained, but it's still important."
"So we're not bad guys? " I asked, tilting my head again.
Killer grinned darkly. "Oh, we're definitely bad guys. The maintaining of the darker side of the balance requires a lot of...destruction. We usually go out and mess up more positive AUs to keep the positivity down."
