My first morning going to UA High, I wake up with a jolt as my unconscious body rolls itself off my bed. Groaning, I look around, blinking the sleep out of my eyes. I squint at my unfamiliar surroundings, taking a moment to realise I'd fallen off my bed.

Perfect. My eyebrows scrunch in annoyance as I roll over and close my eyes once more. It's too early to be getting up.

Without a single trace of dignity left in me, I promptly fall back asleep, still splayed out on the floor.

"SAYURI GET YOUR LAZY ASS UP AND STOP DIRTYING MY FLOOR!"

I yawn lazily to hide my on-edge nerves at the sudden loud noise, "my floor, you mean."

My dad glares at me, green eyes burning me into the floor like two sharply-cut emeralds, "who pays the bills?"

I stay silent, feeling bitter at the rude awakening.

"Now GET UP!" He grabs me by the arm, and I yell in shock as he drags me upright. I snatch my arm back, rubbing at it even though it doesn't hurt, whilst glaring at him from under my long lashes.

Not the most peaceful start to my morning, thanks old man.

My whole room is blurry since I haven't got contacts in, but I still manage to make out the dissatisfied expression directed right at me before he turns to leave.

"Out of the house in forty-five minutes or you'll be late for school," he throws over his shoulder, "Toru is getting the train with some friends in half an hour as she has the sense to be early today."

I huff in annoyance. The favoritism is insane. And my brother, Akio, is off at work, so I can't even get a lift from him.

Me and my dad tolerate each other at best since mum left. It was a messy divorce but a necessary one, and I haven't seen her since. She's tried contacting me, but I can't bear to see her face again.

She was beautiful, with long chartreuse and pink hair cascading over her shoulders, and sparkling grey eyes. From what I remember.

My last memory of her face is bittersweet; her face was sallow, lifeless. All sharp angles and hollow pockets. The vacancy of her dilated pupils is engrained into my memory as she gazed at her folded hands in front of her. Then the door slammed shut, blocking my view.

My chest feels heavy, weighted with my memories and the longing to have had more time with my mother. I blink a few times, waiting for the heaviness to pass like usual, but it stays buried deep in my chest, squeezing my lungs with grief for someone who's gone but not gone.

A loud sound from my right startles me, jolting my body as I scramble to my feet. I turn so I can see the source of the noise, vulnerability invading my brain due to my blind right eye.

I sigh as I realize it's only the cat which frequently makes visits to our house. I crack open my window to let her in, stroking her silky warm fur, a golden honey color. She brushes her head against my outstretched palm, and I smile, the pressure on my chest easing.

The morning passes by in a hasty blur of showering, brushing my teeth, getting dressed, and packing my bag. Then, I'm standing by the door, filled to the brim with trepidation and excitement, the two conflicting emotions warring for dominance.

"Bye dad," I say softly, noticing the purple shadows smudged under his eyes now I have my contact lenses in. He's sat at the round kitchen table, eating breakfast. All the curtains are still closed, leaving soft lamplight to illuminate the cozy space. The quietness of the house indicates the absence of my siblings.
