•*+,+*•I'm a fairly slow eater, so I'm the last one to finish, setting my chopsticks down next to the couple of gyozas I left.
"You gonna eat that?" Kirishima asks hopefully, and I shake my head.
"All yours."
Once he's done with my leftovers, we all get up to put our trays on the rack, before heading outside onto the lawn. The sky's cloudy today, steely grey streaks hanging over us protectively and muting the suns bright rays. I just hope it doesn't rain.
Usually I love the rain, relishing the fresh feeling against my skin, but today we'll be outside for lessons all afternoon, and on top of that, I used non-waterproof mascara this morning. I really don't feel like becoming a wet raccoon lookalike.
As a group of four, we all start a slow walk, feeling content after the food, with the energy drinks keeping us lively. Following Kirishima, Kaminari and I talk about our families, and I find out that he has two younger sisters, and his mum is a pro hero.
I tell him about my older brother, and the yellow haired boy jokes that he's got my brothers perspective, with two younger sisters. It's weird to think about, but I guess he's right.
Kirshima sits at a picnic table under a blooming cherry blossom tree, the pink sharp and bright against the grey sky. We all join, two on each side of the table, and chat about meaningless things for the rest of break time. Mina complains about the muted atmosphere around us, so I pull out my phone to put one of my playlists on shuffle.
"Thanks girl!! Anyways, so Kiri, about that..."
I tune out, and Kaminari's eyes widen as The High Road by Broken Bells starts playing. He eagerly points at my phone, laid flat on the scuffed wood.
"Oh I know this song! My mum plays it sometimes while cooking!"
"Really?" I say excitedly, my eyes widening, and he nods vigorously.
I miss the times when my mum used to play muted songs from our speaker in the kitchen. I can practically hear the stove sizzling as she'd sway to the beat, usually vintage tunes from the 80s. Her humming would fill the dim space, always on tune, never missing a beat.
Kaminari and I start mouthing the lyrics as he turns the volume up. Grabbing some sticks from the floor, he offers one to me, then starts holding his like a microphone, dramatically gesturing in the air along to his lip-sync, swaying side to side in his seat.
My smile hurts my cheeks as I laugh every few lines at Kaminari's enthusiasm.
Kaminari and I mouth the entire thing start to finish, syncing up at certain points to make the same gestures involuntarily. The catchy song floats around this deserted side of the school grounds, and cherry blossom petals fall around us as we collapse into laughter at the end of the song, falling back into the comfortable rhythm of conversation with the others.
The four of us talk about so many things it's hard to keep up with topics at times, things that we're excited over but don't really matter in the long run, and no matter who's talking, my energy doesn't run out, instead the others seem to renew it.
I find myself studying my friends faces, imprinting this moment into memory. It's the first proper time I've had to chill with my classmates in school since coming to UA, the past week being full of assemblies and collecting equipment, hero costumes or timetables.
My gaze lingers on a thin scar spiderwebbing across Kaminari's jawline, a darker patch of hair peeking out from behind Kirishima's neck, the lighter blotches patterning Mina's skin. I notice how the blonde always looks at Kirishima when laughing, slapping him on the shoulder, or pointing at Mina who'd just said something funny. Mina's horns always twitch slightly, as if perking up when she smiles.
