"Goodnight, Aria," Taurtis says, kissing his daughter on her forehead before leaving the bedroom and flicking the light off. As he walks through the hallway to his and his husband's shared bedroom, entering the room and closing the door softly. Seeing Grian sitting on the edge of the bed, staring into space, Taurtis sighs and takes a seat next to him, the bed dipping with the added weight.

Neither of them speak for a moment, before Taurtis sighs. "You feel guilty, don't you?"

Grian looks at Taurtis. "What?"

"You know what I mean, love," Taurtis says.

Sighing at looking at the floor, Grian thinks for a moment. He remembers the events of a few weeks ago, and the words that were said to him, very well.

"I didn't take everything from you, don't be dramatic."

"Yes, you did!"

"Oh please, 'everything' is an overstatement."

"You took Tango and Pearl from us!"

"I literally left them there with you! How could I have taken them?!"

"It means they're gone, Grian!"

The memories echo in his mind like a cry in a large and empty room. In order to make their escape, he had ceased caring and pushed the thoughts out of his mind in the moment, but the truth behind the statement has haunted him since he found out. The reality of death is always hard to perceive at first, but always hits you like a brick once you realize the gravity of the situation. What a fragile thing, life is. It can be beautiful and filled with sentience, but permanently stripped away in a single instant.

Taurtis remains silent, patiently waiting for a response.

"I-" Grian starts, unsure how to proceed. "I guess I never really have been able to hide anything from you, have I?" He turns his gaze back to his lover's eyes.

"I could tell. You haven't been the same since that encounter," Taurtis cups Grian's face and pulls it a little bit closer. "I know it was a really hard decision for you. And, despite the rewards and however many times you'll deny it, I know that you feel guilty. Especially after you found out about the fate of those two."

Tearing up lightly, Grian only confirms Taurtis' beliefs. "Yeah, I do," he says lightly while nodding.

Taurtis pulls Grian into a hug as he starts sobbing into his blue shirt.

"Oh, Taurtis," he says through his cries. "What am I supposed to do? I- I never meant for either of them to lose their lives!" Taurtis runs his hand through Grian's fluffy hair, rubbing circles into his back. "I- I thought they'd just be turned into drone watchers!" Grian tightens his grip on his husband. "This was never something that I intended to happen."

"I know, baby, I know," Taurtis replies, taking Grian's head out of his chest and tilting it upwards so their eyes could meet. "And you may not like what I'm about to say, but I really think you should try contacting them again."
