I've failed. I've failed. The words repeat in his mind. Over and over and over again.

Grian sits quietly on the edge of the dark prismarine roof of his mansion, swinging his legs in the air while looking out into the starry abyss of night. After everything he's survived, he'd never thought this would be his demise. Yet here he is, sitting on a ledge, multiple stories above the hard ground. A cool breeze runs past him, ruffling his feathers and pushing his hair in front of his eyes, almost like the world is encouraging him to jump. To just end it all.

Wrapping one arm around his abdomen, Grian looks down into his lap, curling into himself as his thoughts consume him. Tears start to pool at his eyeline and roll down his cheeks, dropping down onto his red sweater. Holding back a sob, Grian uncurls himself and takes a deep breath as he looks upwards, before reaching into his inventory.

The contents of a small orange bottle shake as Grian pulls it out. He inspects the bottle for a second, turning it over in his hand, continuing to choke and drown in his thoughts.

As Grian's starts to unscrew the cap, the sound of rockets pulls him out of the darkness of his mind. Quickly stashing the bottle of pills up his sleeve, Grian turns his head to the source of the noise, wiping his tears in an attempt to look presentable.

"Hey, bud," Xisuma says softly, landing a few blocks away from Grian. "What are you doing up this late?" He's dressed a bit differently than usual, as his green-and-beige chestplate having been replaced by a tight, black t-shirt, which almost looks out of place among his helmet and leg-armor.

A moment passes before Grian responds. "Nothing," he says, trying to be nonchalant. "Just, couldn't sleep." Returning his gaze to the night sky, Grian anxiously begins to bite his lip.

Xisuma hums in acknowledgment before walking up to Grian and sitting down next to him. "You don't mind if I sit with you, do you?" he asks, leaning back on his hands.

"No," Grian replies softly, still looking forward instead of at Xisuma.

Xisuma takes off his helmet and rests it to his side as Grian takes notice of his slightly messy hair. It almost looks as if he had just woken up. The two sit in silence for a moment, Grian unmoving, the occasional cool breeze flowing through their hair. Xisuma eventually speaks up, deciding to break the very thin ice.

"Do you want to come back to my base? You might find it easier to fall asleep with someone to keep you company," Xisuma offers, also gazing across the starry sky.

Grian considers his proposal for a moment. The serene setting of his bedroom, the calming aromas that often float through Xisuma's base...No. He doesn't deserve that level of comfort. "That's alright," he starts. "I think I'll just stay here," Grian states in hope of convincing Xisuma to leave him alone.

"I see," Xisuma replies, not moving an inch. He pauses, almost as if he's carefully calculating something, before saying; "Well, I guess this is where I'll be spending my night as well then. Wouldn't want to leave you alone up here."

Grian shifts his gaze to look into Xisuma's amethyst-colored eyes. "Why?" He asks, confused as to why he would want to stay with him. "You should go back to your base. I'm not worth losing sleep over."

Xisuma pauses. "Why would you think that?" He asks, tilting his head slightly.

"Well," Grian starts, struggling to construct a feasible reason. "I- I know you have a lot of responsibilities as an admin, and you need sleep." His gaze returns to the inky night sky–anywhere but Xisuma's knowing eyes.

Xisuma laughs softly. "Hah, that's nice of you to think of me," he says. "But I'm not the only one who needs sleep. You should get some rest as well."

"It's okay, Xisuma, really," Grian tries. "Head home, dude. I'll be fine."

"See the thing is, Grian," Xisuma starts. "I can't really leave you here. Not without knowing what you hid up your sleeve when I first got here."

Grian feels the blood drain from his face. "What- what are you talking about?" he stutters, scared of what Xisuma might find if he keeps pushing.

Xisuma sighs. "You know what I'm talking about, Grian," Straightening his posture, Xisuma turns his head to Grian. "There's no point in hiding it."

After a few moments of silence, Xisuma snakes his hand to grab Grian's and holds it. Not squeezing or moving him in any way, just resting together. Grian flinches at the gesture, before semi-relaxing into it. Xisuma waits patiently as Grian's thoughts fight each other over whether or not to be truthful with his admin.

Eventually, Grian shakes his hand away from Xisuma's and reaches into his sleeve, pulling out the small, orange bottle that he had hidden away earlier. He turns it over in his hand, watching the small pills roll around inside. Xisuma extends his hand with his palm facing up, in which Grian shakily places the pill bottle. He closes his fingers around it and holds it for a second before stowing it away in his inventory.

"Thank you," Xisuma starts, looking back at Grian. "Do you want to talk about it?" he says after a small pause.

As Grian begins to speak, his words leave him and he ends up choking out a few sobs as tears start to roll down his face again. He looks down into his lap, unable to meet Xisuma's eyes out of embarrassment.

Sensing these feelings, Xisuma carefully pulls Grian into a tight embrace, resting his chin on top of Grian's head. Rubbing soft circles into his back, Xisuma closes his eyes softly as Grian cries into his chest. He whispers comforting words as Grian weakly grasps Xisuma's shoulders, overwhelmed with raw emotion.

It hurts him, seeing one of his members like this. He wonders what could have possibly happened to Grian in order to drive him into this state. But the cause doesn't matter. Because here on Hermitcraft, there are safe spaces for Grian to heal surrounded by people who love him.

But there is one thing that they're both right about. Boy do they need some sleep.
