CHAPTER SIX

LUCY TRIED TO FIND the girliest movie she could possibly think of to put on in hopes that tim would change his mind and leave. however, they were already forty-five minutes in and tim was still sitting in between the two girls on the couch munching on the popcorn that was in the bowl in his lap. mack had her legs tucked up to her chest as she watched and she would reach over to steal some of his popcorn every once in a while. she wasn't super big on popcorn, so she didn't eat too much.

lucy had her own bowl of popcorn flavored with a different seasoning besides butter. tim claimed to not be a fan of the flavor she chose, so he'd made his own and offered to share with mack. he was definitely shocked to find out the girl wasn't big on the delicious, buttery snack. she reached in to grab a couple more pieces of popcorn at the same time tim was; their hands bumping into each other. he playfully smacked her hand away and shoved a handful of popcorn in his mouth as he smiled at her. she simply shook her head and a small chuckle left her lips as she looked back at the television.

lucy got a phone call and excused herself to answer it, heading into her bedroom. once the door was closed tim looked over at the girl. "you're a really good baker." he stated out of the blue.

she turned her attention to him. "thank you."

"i think i'm going to have to visit the cafe again and try something else there."

mack hummed, shifting her body so she was facing the man. "is there a reason you haven't asked for my number yet?" she turned back to the tv. "if you're not interested in seeing me again outside of lucy's house or my cafe then that's fine, but tell me, you know?"

"it's not that," tim shook his head, "i swear." there was a small silence as he watched her roll her eyes and look back at the television. she could feel his gaze on the side of her head as she let out a small chuckle at the funny scene displayed on the tv. "are you sure that my age isn't an issue?"

mack looked back at him with a raised eyebrow. "that's your concern? shouldn't i be the one concerned about the age difference?"

he rolled his eyes at her, "i'm serious, mackenzie. i don't want to dive in just to end up being rejected because i'm quite a bit older than you. not everyone is into dating someone over ten years older than them."

the blonde girl smiled, "i'm sure, grandpa, don't worry."

tim smiled at the girl, licking his lips before he went to lean in, only to quickly pull back and put his gaze back on the tv as lucy's bedroom door creaked open.

the brown haired girl came back to the couch and plopped back in her spot. "sorry i left you alone with tim for that long. i'm sure it was absolute torture."

mack smirked, "it was unbearable."

tim only scoffed and shook his head as he focused on the movie. his hand fell from the side of the bowl and his fingertips brushed across mack's ankle since her feet were still tucked under her. her cheeks started to heat up and she hoped lucy wouldn't look over and notice. however, tim did. she saw the faint smile appear on his face as he gave her a quick side glance.

there was only about ten minutes left of the movie when tim's phone made a noise. he pulled it from his pocket, cursing under his breath and not even seconds later, lucy's phone went off and she did the same.

"what's wrong?" mack asked.

"we both just got called in for an important case. they think they've located the guy." tim and lucy exchanged glances before both standing up. "we have to go."

mack stood as well, already understanding the situation. "it's okay. go get your guy." she smiled up at time and he gave her a smile back before leaning down to press a kiss to her cheek.

"i'll call you later." he quickly moved around her and headed for the door.

lucy's eyes were wide as she witnessed the interaction and a smirk toyed on her lips. mack ignored her and turned towards the man walking out the door. "you still don't have my number."

"i'll have chen forward it to me on the way to the station. let's go, boot." he gestured for the rookie to follow him.

"you sure about that?" mack joked with a raisd eyebrow.

he smiled at her, "i promise, kid." he joked.

"thanks, grandpa." she jokingly blew him a kiss.

lucy fake-gagged, "you guys are disgusting. i'll make sure he gets your number, don't worry. feel free to stay as long as you need." the two rushed out the door, leaving the blonde standing in lucy's living room by herself.

she decided to clean everything up and do the dishes before making her way back home to where her brother stood at the kitchen counter making himself a sandwich. she just gave him a simple wave before making her way to her room, laying on her bed as he impatiently waited to see if she'd actually receive a text or call from tim before the night ended. she was also a little worried for his safety and she never thought that would happen. was she actually starting to like this middle-aged man? oh god.
