When I got home that day, my mother was waiting for me at the door, "Norman, could I speak with you?"

"They called you already?"

"Yes, but don't worry, I don't believe them for a moment. You, pushing someone around?" she scoffed. "However, I do want to know why this principal guy was so incredibly convinced that you're a terrible person."

I considered this for a moment, but replied, "It's a long story, but I think I can summarize it pretty well. You know my ... uh, friend Ray?"(please someone tell me why I spent like twenty seconds struggling to spell 'friend')

"Yeah. They mentioned him in the call, too."

"Okay, so this group of kids were tormenting him for a while, pretty much just as entertainment. I didn't know about that until I walked to school with him one morning. They started their usual thing, I tried to defend Ray, but I ended up getting punched in the face by this Braxton kid. Ray punched him back though."

I watched my mother's face move from shocked to worried to both before she said, "Oh. Why didn't you tell me?"

I shrugged, "I didn't think it would do any good. The school probably wouldn't believe you."

She sighed, "Well, did anything else happen?"

"Oh, yeah, so after that that group of kids started targeting me as well, a couple other things happened, and they ended up pretty scared of Ray so they mostly left us alone. But then, today, this other kid Keith started talking to us at lunch, just generally being awful, and we, eh, ✨️forcefully✨️ told him to go away. Then he told the principal that we were the ones attacking him and he was believed so... yeah."

She nodded approvingly, "That makes sense. However, one other topic. The principal mentioned that you and Ray ... may be in a relationship?"

My smile faded, "Eeeeeerghhh, I was hoping he'd skip that part. The allegations are true."

"AHAHHA I KNEW IT." She grinned, "Your father owes me money."

I laughed, "Glad you're accepting. I'm going to my room now, byeeee."

"Bye."

The moment I got to my room, I closed the door and collapsed onto the floor. Racoon walked over to me and laid down, nudging my arm. I petted her and pulled out my phone. I had one notification, and it was from Ray:

Ray: There's no use pretending we aren't talking anymore. Sarah knows. Can I meet up with you at the park we went to?

My heart stopped for a second. Fuuuuuuuuck. Okay. Okay. This will be fine. Just reply.

Norman: yes absolutely be right there

Norman: are you okay???

He read my messages but didn't respond. I jumped up, shoved my phone in my pocket, and ran out of the house, telling my mother that I was going to the park. After slightly speeding, I ran into the forest to where we had gone to together before. Ray was standing under the tree where we had sat before, his face in his hands. I aggressively hugged him.

He shrieked a little bit, then murmured, "Oh, just you."

"Ray, what happened?" I asked, my voice muffled by his shoulder. I let go of him and took a step back to look at his face.

Ray laughed shakily, "Well, I guess you know the school called. Sarah wasn't happy. She said, um, a lot of, er, things, but the important bit is that is something like that happens again she's going to kick me out, so . . . ."

I stood for a moment, befuddled, and replied, "Oh shit."

He laughed at that, but he kind of also sounded like he was crying, "Yeah."

We were silent for a bit, then. Finally, Ray said, "I'm not staying there."
