The mine was cold and unfriendly, a long and dark passage leading the group deeper underground. Max felt a chill breeze brush his arm, as if it were warning him about the danger ahead.
"I thought the mine was well guarded," Cassia muttered in a whisper as they descended further into the depths. "But we haven't seen a single Goblet yet."
"Stay alert," Caden cautioned, his eyes scanning the shadows. "They could be anywhere."
The group's footsteps echoed softly in the narrow tunnel. The darkness seemed to press in on them, and the only light came from their flashlights, casting eerie shadows on the damp, rocky walls. The air grew colder and more oppressive as they ventured further, and the silence was broken only by the occasional drip of water from the ceiling.
As they rounded a bend, the tunnel opened up into a larger chamber. The walls of the cavern were lined with glittering minerals. One of them shone its own light, its surface completely black, blacker than anything Max had ever seen.
"There it is," Lucas whispered, his voice barely audible. "The black crystal."
Max and the others stared in awe at the sight. The crystal was mesmerizing, its dark energy almost hypnotic. But they knew they couldn't afford to be distracted.
"Alright, everyone," Max said, breaking the spell. "Caden, Cassia, and Aria, form a perimeter. Keep watch and be ready for anything. Lucas and I will extract the crystals."
The team nodded and moved into position, their senses heightened and weapons at the ready. Max and Lucas approached the crystals, carefully unpacking the containment units designed to hold the powerful stones.
As they worked, the feeling of unease grew stronger. Max couldn't shake the sensation that they were being watched. He glanced around nervously, his flashlight beam flickering over the dark corners of the chamber.
Just as Lucas secured the first crystal, a low, guttural growl echoed through the cavern. The group tensed, their eyes darting towards the sound.
"Someone's coming through the tunnel!" Aria shouted, "We have to leave!"
Max and Lucas immediately backed away from the walls and re-joined the group. They retreated to the narrow tunnel from which they had come. Before they could step inside it, the ground underneath them gave way.
The floor crumbled, and the group plunged into a hidden pit beneath the chamber. They landed with a jarring thud on a lower level, the impact knocking the wind out of them. For a moment, all was silent except for their laboured breathing and the distant sounds of the mine above.
Max groaned as he pushed himself to his feet, his flashlight rolling away and casting erratic beams of light around the cavern. "Is everyone okay?"
"Yeah," Cassia replied, dusting herself off. "I think so."
"Where are we?" Caden wondered aloud, looking around the unfamiliar surroundings.
The new chamber was even darker than the one above, with only faint glimmers of light reflecting off the black crystals embedded in the walls. The air was colder, and the oppressive feeling of being watched was even more intense.
"We need to find a way out of here," Max said, trying to keep the fear out of his voice. "And quickly, I feel like we are in a trap."
As they gathered their bearings, a series of clicking sounds echoed from the shadows. The group turned, their flashlights revealing the small, agile forms of Goblets emerging from the darkness. Their eyes glowed with a sinister intelligence, and they moved with a predatory grace.
"We're not alone," Max muttered, raising his weapon.
"Stay close and move slowly," Lucas instructed. "We need to find an exit before they decide to attack."
The group moved cautiously, their eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of danger. The Goblets watched them, their movements synchronized and menacing.
"There's a tunnel over there," Aria pointed out, her flashlight illuminating a narrow passage on the far side of the chamber.
"Let's go," Max said, leading the way. "And be ready for anything."
They made their way towards the tunnel, the Goblets following at a distance, their presence a constant reminder of the danger they were in. As they reached the entrance of the passage, a loud screech filled the air, and the Goblets lunged.
"Run!" Caden shouted, using his Mech ability and shifting into multiple Cadens. This seemed to have confused the goblets a bit but as soon as they realized that they were nothing more that shadows, they continued to chase them.
The group sprinted into the tunnel, the Goblets hot on their heels. The passage was narrow and winding, the walls pressing in on them as they raced through the darkness. The sounds of the pursuing Goblets grew louder, their screeches echoing off the walls.
"We need to find a way to slow them down," Cassia panted, glancing over her shoulder.
"Keep going!" Max urged, his mind racing for a solution.
As they rounded a bend, Max spotted a series of loose rocks and debris ahead. "Help me block the tunnel!" he called out.
The group quickly gathered the rocks, piling them into a makeshift barrier. It wouldn't hold the Goblets for long, but it might buy them some time.
"That should slow them down," Lucas said, his breathing heavy. "Let's keep moving."
They continued down the tunnel, the sounds of the Goblets growing fainter behind them. The passage gradually widened, and they emerged into a larger cavern, its walls glistening with black crystals.
"There!" Max pointed to a faint light at the far end of the cavern. "That must be the way out."
When they finally reached the end of the tunnel, Max and the group found that it was blocked.
"There's more goblets!" Jaxon shouted in frustration and desperation. "What can we do?"
Just then, the group also heard footsteps behind them, pounding the ground.
"It's either forward of backwards." Max admitted, "But we have to go one way."
Max rushed forward, leading the group, he held up his Mech tool in front of him, shielding himself from the sharp and fatal daggers of the goblets. Suddenly, he felt his hand twitch, he felt the same sensation when he first summoned his Mech tool. Then, a force seemed to split through the goblet crowd, giving a passage to freedom for Max and his friends. Just as they were about to succeed, Max felt exhaustion all over his body, he then felt his legs give away as he fell to the ground.
