Marshmallows crisp in the fire while me and Lucy await in solitude for Alice's return. When she does return her cheeks are flushed. Did they kiss under the moon? Or are they waiting for prom night? Ugh, I'm so disgusted.
"Josephine! You got the fire lit up!" Alice says excitedly.
"I got it actually," Lucy says.
"Oh, nice job Lucy. I'm sorry I didn't help out." Alice says and sits down next to me. She seems too happy, he must have asked her and she must have said yes and then they kissed ugh I can't believe this. Her face is glowing with I just got kissed written all over it.
"Um, I have to use the restroom..." Lucy says awkwardly. "Here Alice, have my stick" she says handing Alice her stick. Why is she leaving me here alone with her?
"Thanks," Alice replies. "Can you pass me a marshmallow?"
I hand her the last one. Did me and Lucy really eat them all? I guess we did accidentally burn a few while we were waiting for Alice. We were both too consumed with our thoughts that we let them melt into the fire.
A few minutes passed and we didn't say anything to each other.
"I hope she's okay," Alice says.
"Huh?" I ask.
"Lucy, she's been gone for a while" she says.
"Maybe she had too many marshmallows," I respond. Alice chuckles. "Were you talking with Joshua earlier?" I know the answer. I don't want her to know that I know.
"Yeah."
"What about?"
"Oh nothing, he just wanted advice about sharing a tent with the Walter brothers." she replies. Is she lying, she was gone for that long and they only talked about that, under the romantic night sky?
"Alice, your marshmallow," I tell her. Her marshmallow is on fire and melts off the stick.
"Oh no, was that the last one?" she asks.
"Yes but you can have mine," I take my marshmallow on its stick and hand it to Alice, she grabs it and our hands touch. She's wearing the blue bracelet I gifted her on her birthday. I look into her eyes and hers meet mine. My heart sinks into my stomach, she's still holding onto the marshmallow and my hand. "Thanks" she says quickly, grabbing it and looking away. She shoves the whole marshmallow into her mouth.
Lucy is standing behind Alice staring at us, I can barely see her but the fire is lighting up her shadowy figure. How long has she been standing there? How is she so quiet to be unnoticed? "Should we go to bed?" Lucy asks us. Alice is frightened and starts choking on her marshmallow. I hurry inside the tent and grab my water for her. She drinks it.
"Thank you," she says.
Lucy takes the rest of the water to set out the fire. We all go into the tent, Alice takes the sleeping bag on the right, Lucy accidentally steals the sleeping bag in the middle from me, she looks at me with guilty eyes "actually I would like to sleep on the end, where it's nice and cold" she says taking the left sleeping bag. I take the middle sleeping bag. Lucy turns off the lantern and we go to bed. I can hear crickets, the other students next to our camp laughing, our tent moving whenever there's a slight breeze.
Lucy sighs in the dark, a moment after,"so, prom is coming up" she says casually.
I look in her direction into pure darkness "uh huh" I hum.
"Do you two have dates yet?" Lucy asks. What is she doing?
"Me and Josie are going together, do you want to come with us?" Alice asks. Wait wait wait, so me and Alice are going together? Did Joshua even ask her to the prom at the lake? Or maybe she said no to him, oh he must be so upset.
