Chapter 40: Overprotective

Chapter 40

Erratic tapping filled the waiting room. Sakusa felt uneasy, he was surrounded by so many women, each in different stages of their pregnancies.

Some were already mothers, with their young kids making a spectacle of themselves in the maternity clinic. He cringed seeing one kid sniffling away as his nose dribbled and he almost felt sick when the kid rubbed at his runny nose with the back of his hand.

Sakusa felt the need to double mask up, he tried to remain calm but hearing more children shrieking and running about was getting him agitated. His eyes wandered to the cheesy cartoony posters plastered on the walls of the clinic, reading some cliché taglines, trying not to roll his eyes.

Clearing his throat, he leaned closer to his wife

"Kaiya, maybe you should wear another mask on top of this one?" He suggested and she laughed,

"Omi, I'll suffocate with two masks... I'm already feeling stuffy wearing this one"

He clenched his jaw when the snotty nosed kid came close to him, scooting closer to Kaiya.

"I just don't want you to catch something from here..." He muttered. Kaiya chuckled, putting her hand on his bouncing knee, trying to calm him down

"Omi honey, why are you so jittery? You were fine during the last visit..." She muttered, soothing him

"I'm fine."

She just nodded, going back to the magazine she was reading.

Sakusa's mind was spiraling again, the more he was surrounded by these brats around him, the more he felt like fatherhood wouldn't suit him...

"Sakusa?" The receptionist called out, alerting him. He followed behind Kaiya into the examination room. Kaiya's mother was smiling, ushering them inside

"Hello my dears! How are we today?" She asked, hugging Kaiya, rubbing her little bump

"I'm great now that the first trimester has ended! I'm glad I'm not nauseous now!" Kaiya said. Sakusa slipped her jacket off, hanging it neatly on the wall hook.

"Come lie down, dear. You know the drill" Okasan said. Kaiya lowered her skirt a little before lifting herself onto the bed. Rolling her shirt up, Okasan gasped

"Oh wow, you're starting to show! Awe, my little grandbaby is in there!" She cooed, grabbing the gel. Kaiya flinched feeling the cold gel spreading on her skin. She always felt a little icky, and the cold aircontioning never helped.

"Kiyoomi-kun, come closer. Let's see the baby!"

Sakusa dragged him chair next to Kaiya, she reached for his hand and he gripped it while his mother in law fiddling with the machine. It took a few moments before she lifted the wand, pressing and rolling it over Kaiya's belly. They watched the grey blobs move around on the screen, while the doctor hummed

"Where are you hiding– Oh! Found you!"

She focused, now pointing to the screen.

"Omi, look! I can see Daifuku's nose! So cute!"

"Mhmm, look at that. The baby's growing nicely in there. Let's hear the heartbeat today"

Sakusa's eyes didn't leave the screen, he stared intently at his baby. He held his breath when he saw it move, the realisation hitting him when his mother in law played the heartbeat. He felt Kaiya squeeze his hand, making him swallow, squeezing it back

"That's one healthy heartbeat. Practically music to my ears!"

Hearing Okasan's remarks made Kaiya so relieved, it was nerve wracking before appointments, she was always riddled with anxiety prior, scared of getting any bad news. Having Sakusa come with her was always the best, she felt so much more relaxed.
