Teddy had eventually calmed down, but he was still quietly sobbing on our walk.
The walk had been quiet since he had his quarrel with Milo. I keep my hand on his back, rubbing circles to soothe him. He had took his glasses off, and had his head in his hands as we walked.
Vern courageously piped up "We showed him. Thought we were a bunch of pussies" he hinted to Milo, trying to cheer up Teddy.
"He ranked my old man" Teddy sniffed, keeping his eyes on the floor.
I moved my arm so it was over his shoulder to show him that I was here for him - Gordie rubbed his back in comfort. Which made me wonder; how Teddy could care so much for his dad, who'd practically killed him. His father doesn't deserve him.
"He ranked my old man" he croaked again, wiping his eyes.
"Why do you care what a fat old pile of shit like him says about your dad?" I squeezed his shoulder, as his glossy brown eyes stared into mine. We all came to a stop.
"He still stormed the beach at normandy, right?" Gordie says. I slowly took my hand off Teddy's shoulder, as I didn't want to smother him.
He sniffed. "Yeah. Just forget it". He shook his head as we continued walking again.
"You think that pile of shit was at Normandy?" Vern asserts. "Nuh-uh" I answered his rhetorical question, hoping it would cheer Teddy up a bit.
Teddy kept his eyes to the floor. "Forget it, alright?"
"He don't know nothing about your old man, he's just dog shit" Vern continues.
"Whatever is between you and your old man, he can't change that" Chris comforted.
Teddy stopped walking "Forget it, alright! Just forget it!" he raised his voice, clearly not wanting to talk about it anymore.
We all were silenced as he rubbed his eyes and continued walking, the rest of us following suit. Nobody said a word after that, not wanting to push his buttons anymore.
Vern suddenly breaks the silence and starts singing "Have will travel, reads the cards of a man" He seemed to be trying to lift our spirits. It's very thoughtful of him and bless his soul, but I don't think this was the right time.
"A knight without armour.." he looked to us, expecting us to join, but was met with Chris's hard glare telling him this wasn't the right time. "in a savage land..." he trailed off, and stopped singing.
There was silence again until Teddy stopped walking. We did too, and looked to him a few steps behind us. He was looking at the ground, until he sighed, then looked back to us with guilt in his brown eyes. "I'm sorry if im spoiling everybody's good time" he speaks softly.
Chris puts a hand on his shoulder "It's okay man, it's okay".
I turned Teddy towards me and gave him a hug. He hugged me back, burying his head in my neck. "You're not spoiling it Teddy, don't worry" I reassured, pulling away from the hug. He stared deeply into my eyes. "Hell, I'd react that way too if anybody spoke badly about my dad. Any of us would" I squeezed his shoulder.
He nodded slowly, giving me a soft smile. "Thanks, Y/N". I smiled back "Of course"
"Maybe it shouldn't be a good time" Gordie muttered from beside us.
We all turned to look at him in disbelief. "You saying you wanna go back?" Chris frowned.
"No" Gordie shook his head. "But going to see a dead kid..maybe it shouldn't be a party" he reasons, tone calm.
Vern piped up. "Yeah, like if he's really bad, like all cut up and blood and shit all over him, I might have nightmares" he stated worriedly.
I shook my head, then we all started walking once more. Vern continued "You know, like all guts and eyeballs all ready to jump and grab-"
"Shut up Vern, Goddamnit!" Chris snapped.
"Can't help it.." he looked to the floor. "Sorry"
