Leadership team consists of 10 students, each student focusing on different aspects. 2 students for the cultural department, 2 for the sports department, 2 for academics, 2 vice presidents and 2 presidents. All the students were in a pair, a boy and a girl. Presidents were responsible for all the other departments. The vice presidents work as assistants of presidents and they can also be their substitute.
The purpose of the team was to bring sponsors to the school to organize different events like inter state sports tournaments, mathematics or debate competitions, music competitions. The leadership team was also responsible for overall growth of the school in that year. In the past, some leadership teams also came up with plans to help improve the students in the area where they are lacking by organizing special tutors for them. The leadership team will also be assessed based on their annual performance.
The leadership team is announced in the last term of grade 10. This gives them all some time to get to know each other and understand each other's strengths and weaknesses. This also gives them sometime to come with a plan which they can start executing in grade 11.
At this time, all the kids were gathering around for afternoon assembly. They all were discussing and guessing who will be this year's Captains and Presidents.
Richa, Maddy, Nate and Jess were also part of this group.
Nate looked at Jess, who was standing on the other corner of the hall, she looked calm and quiet. Nate felt guilty towards her, he knew she was deserving of being the member of the leadership team but if she didn't get in it would be Nate's fault. Hence Nate was nervous. Whereas Jess looked calm and quiet but she was extremely nervous, if there was anyone who could hear her heartbeat they would know. Initially she was confident that she would be part of the leadership team, but things changed in the last 6 months and now she doesn't know what would be the outcome. She didn't have a backup plan.
"Good afternoon Students." The teacher started the assembly. "We are gathered here today to announce the names of selected students who will be part of the leadership team next year. We nurture and educate all our students so that they can achieve their goal. We encourage them to work hard and persevere until the end. As a school we also want to provide many opportunities to our students. Now, without much delay I will request our headmaster to announce our new leadership team."
"Good afternoon students and thank you Miss Noble. I am honored to judge and be a part of this selection process. Let me tell you students, I personally am very proud of each one of you. You all are so talented and extraordinary in your own unique way. It was a difficult task to select just 10 students. Please join me in congratulating..." she opens the letter enclosed in the envelope, "Mike Evans and Alice Spring our new sports captains.." While the students are clapping, Mike and Alice walk towards the stage and after being congratulated by Miss Noble and the headmaster they wait for the remaining team to join them on the stage. Headmaster continues after a long pause, " Now, for our new Cultural captains, please join me in congratulating Geeta Khanna and Lucas Smith" Geeta and Lucas join Mike and Alice on the stage after being congratulated by their teachers, "Next is our academic captains, Rahul Krishnamurthy and Susie Johnson, the brain of our school, please join us on the stage." All the students were welcomed on the stage with a round of applause. "These kids here have their own strengths and will complement each other when working in a pair, their expertise lie in their own field and will help our school grow."
When all the captains were announced and Richa didn't hear her name, her hope was crushed. Richa was a good swimmer but because she wanted to compete with Jess she started playing tennis and didn't qualify for state level swimming competition, due to this she didn't have much hope of being a sports captain. She has been good in acting and has also participated in directing plays, she could be considered as one of the best drama students. She was good in academics, even though she didn't participate a lot in competitions her grades were exceptionally good. She thought she could at least be an academics or cultural captain. She was lost in her thoughts when her gaze fell on Jess. As usual, she had no expressions on her face, it was difficult to understand what she was thinking. Richa noticed her fingers she had crossed them for good luck.
Now, all they could think about is whether they are deserving enough to be vice president or president.
The headmaster looked at all the teachers seated in the front row, "Now to announce our new presidents and vice presidents, I would like to invite our dear principal Mr Roberts on the stage" Mr Roberts, is an old man who will be retiring after 3 years, he has been in this school for a very long time and has created a special place for himself in the hearts of all the students, teachers and staff members. As soon as the kids heard his name they all clapped happily.
Mr Roberts took over the mic from the headmaster and said, "Thank you Mrs Davis. This is an honor and pleasure for me to announce the next rulers of the world" Yes, Mr Roberts always considered his students best in the world. He never thought that he exaggerates. He continued, "My favorite leadership role, Vice presidents, I feel a lot depends on them as they act as the stem for the team and bear the responsibility to keep the team together. What do you think? Who could it be? Can you guess?" The principal looked at the students, while all he could hear was hushed voices. They all looked doubtful and unsure, so without waiting anymore, the principal said, "Well isn't it a difficult task! Thanks to our judging panel I have results in my hand. Please help me congratulate Miss Richa Lou and Master Ben Mile". Richa didn't believe for a second, she thought she was hearing things, Maddy pinched her arm and said, "It's you, go on the stage. Miss Vice President!" That's when Richa realized, walked towards and stood on the stage.
Jess was more nervous, as there was only 1 chance left. All her efforts, achievements and mistakes were on top of her mind and she was carefully thinking about them. Her hands were covered with cold sweat but her face was calm as always. She stood in her spot, lost in her thoughts, when a girl next to her shook and called her name. "Congratulations Jess, Mr. Roberts is calling you on stage."
"Miss Jess, Miss President, we are waiting for you to come on the stage.", said Mr Roberts.
Jess started walking still in shock and analyzing the situation around her. She walked on the stage and stood next to all the other students.
"Miss Jess Mitcham and Master Colin Smith will be our presidents starting next school year. We hope you make use of this opportunity to take our school to a higher level and make us all proud. I once again congratulate you all and wish you all the best for the upcoming challenges.", Mr Roberts said before handing the mic to Miss Noble and walking down the stage.
"Congratulations students, we all know you all deserve to be part of this team. Now I would like to invite Master Colin and Miss Jess to come here and say a few words.", Miss Noble said before handing the mic to Colin.
"Thank you Miss Noble. I would like to thank all our teachers and judges for considering us deserving of this opportunity. I would like to assure you that we will do our best for our school and our peers and juniors. Thank you.", Colin said before passing the mic to Jess. "Good afternoon everyone. I am honored for being called a President of this school. Thank you all the teachers for educating us and nominating me for this position. I don't know the future so I can't make any promises about that but I can definitely promise that I will try my best and give it my all to use this opportunity for the betterment of our school, my colleagues and my juniors. Thank you.", Jess said and handed the mic back to Miss Noble. "Thank you our new Presidents, we will remember your words and we wish you all the very best for your upcoming challenges. I hereby announce the end of today's agenda. Students please disperse back to your classes in line.", Miss Noble said before going backstage.
The leadership team started congratulating each other by handshake and formally introducing each other. They all added each other on whats app and Jess helped create a group. Jess and Richa also followed the process, almost forgetting their past. "Myself and Jess will schedule a meeting before we go on our annual break.", Colin continued, "Let's all get back to our classes now and remember to set a good example as all eyes will be on us going forward."
