𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐇𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐖𝐀𝐘𝐒 𝐎𝐅 Liberty High School had never seemed so dark and dull to Nessa Dempsey. For about a month now, her life and all of the scenes in it had been devoid of any color, any life, and any silver linings. As if taking away one of her childhood best friends in a drunk driving accident wasn't enough, the universe had to hand her more, and one of her friends – Hannah Baker – had passed away from suicide just two long weeks ago.

Wherever she turned, wherever she looked, there were reminders. Suicide prevention posters, guidance counselors, and of course – Hannah's decorated locker to serve as a memorial for the students of the school. Nessa has been the first one to put something on it the day after Hannah had passed. She placed a simple polaroid photo of the two of them together, along with a single tulip.

Nessa dragged her two feet through the halls, her white Converse squeaking as she pulled them across the linoleum floor. She glanced up at the locker, seeing two underclassmen girls taking a picture, and talking amongst themselves as they posted the photo to their social media accounts. Nessa rolled her eyes, this was her least favorite part of it all. She continued along the hallways as she stepped into communications class, a class she luckily had with all of her friends.

"Good morning, Ness." Zach said as Nessa placed her backpack down in her seat next to her brother.

"You literally drove me to school this morning." Nessa replied as she laughed at her twin. The bell rang, and there was an empty desk next to her that was supposed to be occupied by Justin Foley. Nessa motioned to the desk and looked at Zach, who just shrugged.

"There are a number of ways to get help if you need it, or if a friend does." Mrs. Bradley began. It had been two weeks, and they were still on the conversation of suicide prevention. If only they had been this serious before Hannah Baker had taken her own life. "All of this information is on the board outside of my room or outside of the main office. It's on the Liberty High homepage."

"Mrs. Bradley, is it possible we could be done with all this?" one of the students near Nessa, named Pratters, asked. "I mean, it's been over a week. Isn't it healthy to like, move on?"

Nessa rolled her eyes, scoffing as she slumped down in her chair. The rest of the class began conversating, irritated murmurs echoing throughout the room.

"Okay, everyone, thank you." Mrs. Bradley silenced the group of kids.

"Seriously, I know, it's tragic." Pratters continued. "But, I don't want to keep being reminded all the time. It's depressing."

"We're never done with it, Mr. Pratters." Mrs. Bradley said calmly. "Which is why it's important to know the signs that someone you care for might need help. Are they withdrawing from friends and family, is there a change in their appearance?"

The teacher continued on, repeating the same warning signs that she had been talking about since Hannah had passed away. Nessa was almost positive that she could recite them by now. However, none of it helped, because Hannah was still dead.
