"The signal isn't working." Brett raised his phone. I leaned against the smooth counter surface.
"Worried because you can't call your boyfriend." I teased him.

"I need to make sure James doesn't jump over a cliff."

Today was the last day of summer break before junior year. Some people like James and Lucy would consider this day a dark one, but I was excited. Yes, school does get serious this year, but it's our second last high school year. We got to enjoy it. I also have to make sure we all get into the same collage, or at minimum in the same area.

I don't have to worry about James. His parents will probably donate the Eiffel Tower. Brett is an athlete. America second favourite career next to actors. Lucy is the one that worries me. She is smart and has many different qualities, but she suffers from dyslexia and laziness. It's sounds harsh, but it's true. I can't turn on subtitles when we are watching a movie because the words distract her. I'm worried that see won't keep up and we all don't end up going to the same collage.

Brett call finally got through. "James, James I can't hear you," he told him over the phone. He was on speaker, but only static could be heard.

I rested my chin on top of my hands. Just admiring the stupid boy over there. I learned a lot about him over the summer. We spent almost everyday together. His family was also very inviting. I got tan from playing volleyball outside with his siblings.

We are not officially together. We haven't talked about it either, but it's quite obvious. We shared fair amount of kisses, and we were more intimate with each other than you would with your friends. At first I thought Brett was the kind of guy who knew exactly what he wanted and got whenever he wanted it, but it turn out it's the opposite. He is gentle with me. I was surprised by how warm he is. Literally. His skin is so hot. Like lava. It contrast my always cold body. I find it very comforting to be near him. Almost like a need.

A middle aged couple walked in. They sat down on one of the tables beside the window. There was no one else here beside us, them, and my manger. Tonight wasn't as busy as it was the height of summer. We got a lot of passer by who found the dinner intriguing. The summer was coming to an end and vacation season came to an end.

Brett was now approaching me. "When are you done with your shift?" He asked.

"I have to stay here until 11pm."

"I have to call James again." He turned around. The couple was very obviously listening to our conversation. My eyes flickered between them and the back of Brett head.

"It's alright, you don't have to drive me home. My dad is going to pick me up anyways," I told him. He turned around with a grimace on his face. He looked uneasy with the idea of leaving me alone during this hour of the day.
"Are you sure. I can just wait," he tried to argue.
