I stared at my reflection in the mirror. My root was showing. At the beginning of the school year, I coloured my hair darker. My mom advised me against it, but it seemed to complement me.
I never bothered to maintain the dark complex. Between waking early for school and catching up on TV shows late at night. I was utterly exhausted.
I hated waking up early for school. Night school would be a better fit than having to wake up at the crack of dawn. At least then my attendance would increase.
I grabbed my uniform from the chair. I chose the white shirt with the green jumper and skirt. The uniform was not the worst, but I hated the rule about skirt length. I could wear pants, but they looked ugly. None of the other girls wore pants either.
I took my school bag downstairs with me. My mom was brewing coffee. The thick smell suffocated any ounce of joy in me. I could never understand how people enjoyed coffee. It has a strong smell and taste like coal.
Liam was already here. He took the last chunk of cereal in his bowl. The cereal I hid in the highest cabin so he would not be able to see it. Yet that small creature of a brother somehow managed to find it.
When he was distracted by getting milk, I grabbed the bowl. It is his fault that we ran out so fast. What a perfect punishment for all the lies he told Mom.
"Hey, that's mine," He yelled.
"Finders are keepers." I stuffed a spoonful in my mouth.
I turned around the table as he reached for me. I tried to keep the food in my mouth while my laughter echoed through the kitchen. A low growl followed it.
"Did you just growl?" I turned around.
He looked at me with glowing eyes.
Liam covers his eyes with his hands. clenched his face as if he were in a great deal of pain.
"Liam?"
He suddenly jerked up. In response, the bowl flew out of my hand. Cereal covered him and everything around.
He stared at me, like he could grasp what had just happened. If what happened did happen, and I did not simply imagine his eyes being golden.
He told me a wild story last night. One I accused him of making up. It resembled the comic books he read, flesh-eating boys and werewolves. I never once doubted him to be an animal, he is just not the cool kind you see on TV.
"For god sake." Mom barged into the kitchen. "Who did this?"
Liam pushed past her and slammed his bedroom door. I flinched at the aggression.
