Hot shot had recently started his treatment for cancer. Hot shot had a rare type of brain cancer. Hot shot was in the first part of his treatment which was radiation therapy. Hot shot was being strong. Hot shot was wondering about a few things such as big feelings he has been feeling. Hot shot was feeling sad and angry at times. He was also feeling alone, nervous, worried, overwhelmed and confused. He was wondering why this was happening and such. He had all of these feelings twisted up inside.
"Mummy I feel so many feelings sometimes and they are all very big and not fun to have," Hot shot said.
"I can understand that," Quickshadow said. "It is normal to feel many big feelings due to something like this," she said.
"I sometimes feel so sad," Hot shot said. "Why did this have to happen to me? Why?" he asked.
"I don't know why this happened to you," Quickshadow said. "Doctors don't know why some kids get brain tumors or some other types of cancer and others don't," she said.
"I also feel angry a lot of the time," Hot shot said. "It's just not fair!" he said.
"I know it's not fair," Quickshadow said. "But life isn't fair is the problem," she said. "Cancer doesn't care who it strikes," she said.
"I feel scared a lot of the time still too," Hot shot said.
"It is normal to be scared," Quickshadow said. "It is normal for a kid to be scared about having a brain tumor or another type of cancer, even grown ups with brain tumors and others types of cancer get scared too," she said.
"I feel so confused about what is happening," Hot shot said.
"It is normal to feel confused," Quickshadow said. "Things are changing a lot it can be hard to keep up and understand what is going on," she said.
"I also feel like it is too much and so much is going on and I don't know if I can handle it," Hot shot said. "Is there a word for that?" he asked.
"Yes overwhelmed," Quickshadow said. "Lots of kids feel overwhelmed due to a brain tumor diagnosis, as do adults too," she said. "it is normal to feel that way," she said.
"I feel so alone at times," Hot shot said.
"It is normal to feel alone," Quickshadow said. "But remember you are not alone, your father, and I and the rest of the family, we are here for you through it all," she said. "So you are far from alone, thousands of children get brain tumors every year around the world, so you are far from alone," she said.
"Oh okay," Hot shot said.
Hot shot felt better after talking to his mother. Hot shot even watched the videos about feeling sad and about feeling angry. Hot shot learned that everyone feels sad and that is part of life. No one likes being sad. Once he acknowledges the sadness and rides it through it will be easier to put himself back together. He should also express his emotions so he can feel better. Hot shot learned that he should let his anger out and not bottle it up. He can talk to his family, doctors and friends. He can also yell into a pillow too. He can also play a game to help himself feel better. Hot shot was glad he watched those videos they were very helpful. Hot shot knew these feelings can happen at anytime and that they were normal. He had nothing to worry about with it and to talk about his feelings.
Hot shot was soon taken to get another radiation treatment done. Hot shot was wondering how it was going to go today. Hot shot saw his friends there at the clinic. He was happy to see them. "Hi guys," Hot shot said. "It's great to see you," he said.
"It's great to see you too," Whirl said.
"Hi," Hoist said.
"Hello," Wedge said.
"Hi," Medix said.
The five friends were all happy to see each other. They were all so excited to be together again. They were looking forward to spending time together before treatment. They all began to play together and have a lot of fun.
Then Hot shot's turn came. Hot shot went back and got on to the table. Hot shot had his mask put on and he listened to music as the treatment was going on. Hot shot was relaxing during the radiation therapy. He didn't move a muscle during it and did as the radiographer told him too. Hot shot soon heard the machine stop. "Okay Hot shot we are all done for today good job," the radiographer said. "You did really well kid," he said.
"Thank you," Hot shot said. Hot shot was feeling pretty proud of himself for how he handled it. Hot shot was soon getting checked on by Dr. Lopez and Dr. Zhao they wanted to make sure he was doing alright.
"Okay Hot shot you are looking good so far," Dr. Lopez said. "You seem to be doing fine with the radiation therapy," he said.
"You look great," Dr. Zhao said. "It will be a while before we know how well it is working but we should find out soon enough," she said. "But for now Hot shot is doing well with treatment and we just need to keep an eye on his for the remaining six weeks of his treatment," she said.
"Thank you," Quickshadow said. "Come on Hot shot we are going now," she said.
"Can we get some lunch?" Hot shot asked.
"Sure," Quickshadow said. Hot shot was happy to have some lunch from a local fast food place. Hot shot was able to relax and eat it at home. He was sitting in front of the TV eating it. Hot shot was able to rest quietly during that time.
Hot shot began to play with his toys shortly after lunch. Hot shot was able to have some fun during that time.
That night Hot shot was able to have nice warm bath since the area of his port was finally healed. Hot shot was able to have nice and relaxing bath to get clean. Then Hot shot went to bed.
Hot shot was going to keep fight his cancer.
