Pov Nobody
Riley and Val had known each other since adolescence, growing up together where everyone knew everyone else's business. Riley was the lively, emotional type and clumsy, while Val was the outgoing and adventurous soul who could light up any room with her laughter and coolest.
Their paths diverged after university: Riley pursued a career in hockey, while Val traveled the world, seeking out new experiences and cultures. Despite the physical distance, they kept in touch sporadically through emails and occasional visits back home.
Years passed, and both found themselves back in their hometown for different reasons. Riley had recently returned after a failed relationship and was looking to rebuild her life, while Val was taking a break from her globetrotting to care for her ailing mother.
One stormy evening, with rain pouring down in sheets, Riley found herself at the local coffee shop, seeking refuge from the weather and his own thoughts. To his surprise, Val walked in, her hair damp and a smile on her face that hadn't aged a day.
"Riley!" Val exclaimed, crossing the room to embrace her. They exchanged pleasantries, catching up on each other's lives over steaming cups of coffee.
As the rain continued to pour outside, they reminisced about their shared childhood memories — riding bikes down the steep hill behind Riley's house, camping out in Val's backyard, and watching meteor showers late into the night.
"I never forgot those times," Val admitted softly, her gaze meeting Riley's with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat.
"Me neither," Riley replied, her voice barely above a whisper. She had always admired Val's free spirit, her ability to seize the moment without hesitation.
They fell into a comfortable silence, the kind that only old friends could share. Outside, the storm raged on, lightning flashing across the sky and thunder echoing in the distance.
Without warning, Val stood up abruptly, her eyes locking onto Riley's. "Come with me," she said, her voice barely audible over the sound of the rain.
Riley hesitated for a moment, then nodded. They left the warmth of the coffee shop behind and stepped out into the deluge. The rain soaked them within seconds, plastering Riley's hair to her forehead and causing Val's clothes to cling to her body.
They walked in silence for a few blocks, the only sound the steady drumming of raindrops on the pavement. Finally, Val stopped under a streetlamp, turning to face Riley.
"I've always wondered..." Val began, her voice trailing off as she reached out tentatively and brushed a raindrop from Riley's cheek. She shivered at her touch, her heart pounding in her chest.
Before she could respond, Val closed the distance between them, her lips meeting hers in a kiss that was both gentle and fierce. Riley's hands found their way to her waist, pulling her closer as she returned her kiss with equal fervor.
Time seemed to stand still as they stood there in the rain, lost in each other's embrace. The world around them faded away, leaving only the sensation of Val's lips against hers, the taste of rainwater on their tongues.
When they finally pulled apart, both were breathless, their chests rising and falling in sync. Riley searched Val's eyes for any sign of doubt or regret, but all he found was warmth and longing.
"I've missed you," Val whispered, her forehead resting against Riley's. "I've missed this."
Riley could only nod, hers throat tight with emotion. She had never dared to imagine a moment like this, where the past and present collided in such a perfect, unexpected way.
As the rain began to taper off, they stood together in the quiet street, hand in hand, unsure of what the future held but grateful for the connection they had rediscovered.
For Riley and Val, that kiss in the rain was more than just a moment of passion — it was a promise of possibility, a reminder of the enduring bond that had always existed between them, even when life had taken them in different directions.
And as they walked back to Riley's house, their fingers intertwined and hearts full, they knew that no matter where life took them next, they would always carry that rainy night and the love it had awakened within them.
