~Amelia~"Ugh, my head," I groaned as I woke up, rubbing my aching neck. I remembered Erwin saying something to Levi, but then there was nothing. From the pain in my neck, Levi must have knocked me out.
Taking in my dank surroundings, I attempted to figure out where I was. The first thing I noticed was how dark it was. The only source of light was a tiny window above me—a barred window. I was in a prison cell. Sniffing the air, the other cells' urine stench confirmed it.
My hands clenched the disgusting bed beneath me as I willed my body to move and sit up for a better look around. I managed to sit up, but it took a lot of effort. Did Levi really need to hit me that hard?
As I looked outside my cell, I practically jumped out of my skin. The chains attached to my feet and hands rattled loudly as I reacted. Commander Erwin and Levi sat outside my cell, staring me down intently. The presence of the chairs they occupied indicated that they had been sitting there for quite some time.
"Hello, Amelia," Erwin greeted, resting his chin on interlocked hands.
"Hello?" I responded hesitantly. "Just how long have the two of you been there?" I had heard from Furlan that I tended to snore. Just another embarrassing detail to add to my growing list in front of two incredibly handsome individuals.
"Not for too long, don't worry. The guard stationed outside let us know you were starting to stir," he reassured me, calming me down a little.
I attempted to compose myself, but the sight of the Commander of the Scouts and Humanity's strongest soldier staring me down was enough to make anyone nervous.
"Good. But I have to say... was the prison cell necessary? If you hadn't knocked me out, you would have learned that I would have willingly gone with you," I bit back, a little grouchy from the headache pulsating in the back of my skull.
Erwin appeared surprised by my attitude. "Well, I suppose I should apologise for that and for you being in a prison cell. However, you must understand that in our situation, we must be cautious around people with powers we don't understand. You claim you're not a Titan shifter, but how are we supposed to believe that? Until we build some trust, you'll have to remain in this cell."
I had to admit he had a point. I didn't want to rot away in a prison cell, so I started brainstorming how to gain Erwin's trust without revealing too much about myself.
Pondering it briefly, I decided to suggest something to him. "How about I tell you a little about myself, and then we can go from there?"
"Seems reasonable," Erwin agreed with a pleased smile on his face. I knew I had just played into his little ploy, but it was either this or staying imprisoned.
"My story is a long one, and you're probably a busy man, so I'll summarise," I began, earning an amused look from Erwin. "After a normal day, I went to bed and woke up outside the Walls. I still have no idea how I managed to get out there. Luckily, it was nighttime, so there weren't any Titans about. I ran until I found some shelter. The next morning, a Titan found me, and I thought that was the end. However, instead of killing me, the Titan stopped before me. He insisted I take his hand, so I did. When I touched him, my head was flooded with his thoughts, and I could somehow understand him." I decided to stop there to gauge how they reacted to my words, leaving out the details about Annie, Reiner, and Bertholdt. I needed to keep some information for bartering purposes.
"So, you had no previous knowledge of your ability before then?" Erwin asked.
"No, I had never seen a real Titan before that day either. So I guess I may have always been able to do this," I lied, trying to convince them I was still from this world."
"And this was the Titan that we found you with?"
"Yes, it was. He's been my travelling companion and protector ever since that day. He's the sole reason I've survived as long as I have," I recalled fondly. He was my best friend—something I never thought I'd say about a Titan.
"I shall believe what you're saying for now. Although, I can sense you're being vague on purpose, which is smart of you. I am satisfied enough for now, so we can pick up this conversation later," Erwin stated, pulling himself to his feet.
"Levi, I assign you to keep an eye on her. One wrong move, and you know what to do." Levi nodded to his superior, turning to me with intense eyes. I could tell he wasn't happy with this arrangement, but I had convinced Erwin to let me out of my prison cell, which was something to be proud of.
"For now, we're keeping you a secret from the Military Police and Garrisons, as I'm sure they'll be equally as interested in you as we are." I couldn't help but feel a mix of gratitude and apprehension as I faced the uncertainty of what lay ahead.
"Levi, I need you to ensure she keeps a low profile. Don't let her go outside of headquarters; take her back down at sunset, and give me a report of everything she does at the end of the day. She'll continue sleeping down here until we can be sure she's not a threat." Erwin started to leave, not sparing me another glance. "But she's all yours, Levi," he joked as he continued to walk away.
I sat there in silence, flabbergasted at Erwin's joke. What was I supposed to say after that? But just as he was about to leave, something popped into my head. "Just one more thing, Commander."
"Yes?" he turned back to me.
"Could I have my things back? I believe I was carrying a bag before you took me." I had to get those maps back; they contained important information I could use against Erwin.
"I'm sorry, but you weren't carrying anything on you when we found you," Erwin replied, though I could tell he was lying. He must have found the maps and was keeping them for himself. The thought made me uneasy. Erwin wasn't supposed to know so much about Paradis Island at this point in the plot. I thanked myself for not going into too much detail on the maps; hopefully, I hadn't messed up too much of the story.
"If you let me know what you were carrying, I can replace them for you." He flashed me a wide smile, trying to seal the deal.
"It's fine; there wasn't anything important in there." On the off chance that he hadn't seen them, I wouldn't bring attention to them.
As if on cue to break the tension, my stomach decided to rumble. "What do you guys do for food around here?" I asked tentatively, patting my empty stomach.
