The aroma of spices and simmering goodness filled the air as Rudra sat at the lunch table with his family in their cozy Australian home. His mom, beaming with pride, had prepared a feast of his childhood favorites – his Dadi's signature lamb curry and his Maa's melt-in-your-mouth butter naan. It had been a while since he'd taken a break from his demanding career, and his family, especially his Dadi, had been relentless in their complaints. So, Rudra decided to give them his undivided attention, savoring both the delicious food and the warm company.
Midway through lunch, Dadaji, his grandfather, a mischievous twinkle in his eye, cleared his throat. "Rudra," he began, "your mother and I have noticed you haven't brought a nice girl home lately. When are we going to see you settled down with a lovely lady?"
Rudra chuckled, a hint of nervousness coloring his laughter. " Dadu?" he teased. "What about Dadi? Do I need to find someone for her too?"
A playful swat landed on his head from behind, courtesy of his father. "Badmash!" his father exclaimed, using the affectionate Hindi term for "rascal." "They're talking about your wedding!"
Dadaji, unfazed by the interruption, continued, "Shaadi ke liye umar kya hoti hai? (What's the right age for marriage?) Don't you want to give your parents some grandchildren to spoil?"
Rudra, unable to hold back his laughter, shook his head. "Oh come on, Papa," he protested. "It's not like there's a specific age for this. I'll get married when I find the right person."
His mother, ever the pragmatist, chimed in. "Kab karoge, beta? (When will you get married, son?) You're not getting any younger."
"Maa," Rudra replied, a touch of seriousness creeping into his voice, "I'll get married when I find the one. Someone I truly connect with, someone who understands me."
His father, ever the voice of reason, placed a hand on Rudra's shoulder. "Don't worry, beta. We're with you on this big decision. Marriage is a lifelong commitment, and you shouldn't rush into it. Find the one who will be your partner in everything, your confidante, your best friend. Someone who will stand by you through thick and thin, someone who brings joy to your life."
Rudra's heart ached with a bittersweet pang. His father's words resonated deeply, mirroring the very qualities he yearned for in a life partner.
But the truth he longed to share, the one burning in his heart, was a truth his family wouldn't understand – the person he wanted to spend his life with, the one who ticked all those boxes, was already taken, and it wasn't a woman.
He yearned for the day he could be honest with his family, but for now, he could only hold onto the hope that someday, somehow, he would find his own version of true love, someone who would accept him for who he truly was.
Rudra forced a smile, nodding at his father's words. The weight of his secret felt heavy in the warm, sun-drenched room. He knew coming out to his family would be a challenge, a hurdle he wasn't sure he was ready to face just yet. But his father's acceptance, his emphasis on finding love and companionship, gave Rudra a flicker of hope. Maybe, someday, his family would understand.
