A Dark Meeting

Leaving the town, [Y/N] made her way towards the house she and Link shared. It was silent, the walk back. She lifted her hands and wrapped them around her bag straps. Dropping her eyes, she locked them onto her feet. She walked this path a countless number of times, but this time, it felt different as her boots scuffed against the dirt path, not bothering to truly lift her feet with each step.

She felt different towards the dirt she walked on everyday. She felt a connection. [Y/N] viewed herself as dirt, as a single particle of dirt.

Dirt is everywhere, just like people. If someone were to walk into a flat field, a shovel in hand, and dig up a handful sized hole, people would notice. On the other hand, if someone were to remove the smallest pinch sized clump, no one would notice. That minuscule clump, that was [Y/N]. If she was removed from the sea of people that surrounded her, the world would still spin and people would continue on about their days like nothing happened.

She was insignificant, unlike Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf, each of them a large bucket of dirt. If one of them disappeared, the world would change drastically, for the better or worse. She traveled and fought with Link, but, in all honesty, he didn't need her. He never did. He is, and has been, more than capable of handling himself and the challenges he is and was presented with. If anything, the woman held him back, hindered his ability to carry out his duties as the protector of Hyrule. Besides, he has Zelda.

Her feet stopped moving. [Y/N] lifted her head and stared at the wooden door in front of her with empty eyes. The lights in the house were still on. She could hear Link moving around, most likely getting something to eat. Her eyes moved to her hands that held onto her sack's straps.

Quietly, she slid the bag off her shoulders. She moved it in front of her and sadly admired the embroidered triforce on the dark brown fabric, the bottom right triangle a brighter yellow than the other two. She had embroidered it onto most of Link's things.

A faint quivering smile graced her lips. [Y/N] gently sat her bag on the ground next the door, slightly leaning on the wall so the arrows wouldn't snap. She took a step back and took one last look at the door before turning on her heel and running.

The female started out slow and quiet as to not cause any commotion, not wanting to disturb Link or cause him to come out. Gradually though, her legs began to accelerate. First it was just a brisk jog that broke into an all out sprit. Her toes were the only thing to come into contact with the ground, a small cloud of dirt appearing with each stride.

She made it over two hills before her calves began to burn. Tears began to pool in her eyes as she forced herself to not slow down, instead, she forced herself to move faster. Her arms pumped at her sides. Synching her eyes shut, she felt the warm tears flow from her eyes, run sideways across her cheeks, and leap off into the air.

She inhaled deeply to keep her snot from running down her face, choking a bit afterwards. Her bottom lip trembled as she fought back sobs. [Y/N] opened her eyes and noticed a tree in the distance. Her lips turned upwards into a smile. Her legs moved the fastest they ever had before, unable to wait to get to the tree.

Once multiple feet away from the tall, thick bark clothed plant, she slowed to a walking pace. She moved to it and placed her hand on an engraving.

[Y/N], Link's soulmate

A heart framed the words. At the time, [Y/N] laughed at the cheesiness of Link and his carving. He only responded with, "But this way, everyone will know that you're mine, and that I'm yours." She could still remember that beaming white smile of his that he gave her as he wrapped her in his arms and kissed her.

She looked up at the leaves softly swaying in the night breeze. Her smile grew as she replayed the memory. Her other hand clenched the area around her heart.
