TODAY WAS THE DAY THAT SALEAH BARNETTE would die. She was sure of it.
She hadn't seen Craig the entire morning. She was filled with nerves, she threw up twice..her dinner from the night before, and then her breakfast.
The morning passes quickly, and before she knows it she's in the elevator on her way to the roof with Orna by her side.
"Remember what I told you?" The woman asks calmly.
Saleah nods, "Grab my weapons and leave as soon as I can, if I don't see any of my allies I'll look for them later." She recalled everything her mentor had told her.
Orna nodded in approval. She turned to the tribute. "Saleah no matter what you want to do, think first. You're heart will tell you to do one thing, but you need to use your brain, okay?"
Saleah nodded once again as Orna embraced her.
"You'll do well. I know you will." She whispered into her ear. "I'll be watching you, good luck." Orna parted from the girl as they reached the roof.
Saleah exited the elevator, sparing one last look at her mentor, her biggest helper. Then Saleah made her way into the hovercraft.
Craig was already there, directly across from Saleah. They made eye contact for a second, then Saleah looked over to Feather, who gave her a silent nod of reassurance.
A woman approached Saleah, instructing her to hold out her arm.
"Your tracker." She explained as she inserted the electronic device into the girl's arm. It blinked for a second, before it simply vanished, but Saleah knew it was still there, tracking her at the very second.
The hovercraft took off, and the anxious feeling grew. Saleah knew she was doomed.
-
Saleah stood in the bland changing room. She was now wearing baggy white pants, a black long-sleeved shirt, and a bulky thermal coat.
"I've never seen anything like this before... Seems you'll be somewhere extremely cold.." Laycey mumbled as she toyed with Saleah's outfit.
"Snow?" Saleah questioned.
Laycey shrugged, "Maybe. Anyway, Orna gave this to me, she said it's for you." Laycey pulled out the necklace that Orna had given Saleah the night before.
Saleah smiled as Laycey put the necklace on and tucked it safely into Saleah's shirt.
"Make sure no one sees it or we'll both be in big trouble. Tokens aren't allowed in the games."
"Then why did you even agree to sneak it in?" Saleah questioned.
Laycey grinned, "I've been the stylist for eleven for quite some time...Orna only gives that necklace to the tribute she considers special to her. Of course, all tributes are special to their mentors, but some more than others."
