A plan was being laid out. Wu had run checks on the names, making any necessary connections.

"You've gotten a little taller, you're almost about to outgrow me."

Jane pats your head and you continue to grumble, a slight flush on your cheeks. Whenever you're around your father you seem to revert back to a child.

"Dad, stop it, we're on the job." You swat his hand away and he just smiles.

"Alright alright, what's the plan boss man?"

Renard clears his throat as he goes through what they intend to do.

"We have more than a dozen suspects and little to no time to work on. We need to delegate, figure out which names will get us the information we need fastest. I have Wu running a check on three of the judges and the prosecutor."

Jane scans the board, tapping his chin.

"Let me talk to him."

He points to an image.

"Jess Hylie? He's a federal judge. It'll be harder to break him. He has connections." Nick states.

Jane waves his hand.

"Trust me, he'll break the easiest. Look at his eyes, small beady. It just oozes deceit. Prim suit suggests he craves power. The pin is a nice touch, but it's slanted. He's most likely married, but having an affair. His wife probably suspects that's why she hasn't been properly adjusting the accessory. He's a mook. He doesn't think he'll be caught. If we threaten him with just a bit of evidence he'll sing like a bird."

Jane smiles after the assessment and they all just all exchange a look.

"We can have him here in ten minutes." Renard says.

"Great, I'll be grabbing a cup of tea with my daughter if you all will excuse me."

Jane stands with a smile and you rush to your feet, following behind.

"They're quite the pair." Renard states.

"You think he knows, about the whole Wesen thing I mean. (Y/N) figured it out in thirty minutes." Hank inputs.

Renard looks a bit more guarded.

"Right now let's focus on the current problem, we can worry about that later."

They had enough on their plate as it is.

The calm manner in which he stirs his tea is all the indication you need. You've learned from the best, so Jane isn't surprised when he sees the way you study him. Much like he'd done to others for years.

"You know, don't you dad?"

"Know what? That you and this team are hiding some big elaborate secret that's linked to that detective Burkhardt."

You shift, and Jane just smiles.

"The entire time we were talking your captain kept casting subtle looks in his direction. His partner has also become subconsciously defensive. It's probably instinct for them at this point. When I gave my little assessment they looked a bit too worried. Not for your friend's sake, but a secret that they all share by their body language."

Sometimes it really was a curse.

"I'm not here to interrogate you. I just want to help. Whatever this secret is, you would have told me if you thought I should know. I'm not going to pry. I just need to know that you're safe."

You nod.

"I'm safe dad, I promise. Nick, Hank, all of them, they're good people. They help people, just like you and mom."

This time his smile is easy, soft.

"I'm glad."

He places the mug down and when he reaches over and places a hand on your cheek, you lean into it. It's a gesture that he'd used to comfort you whenever you were scared as a kid. Whether it be thunderstorms or invisible monsters. You'd spent so long being hostile when you first got adopted that when you finally opened up, when you started to trust them, your walls just fell away. You weren't just some burden in his life. In his eyes, you were his daughter.

"I'll do everything I can to get him back safely. If I'm right about these people, then he's still alive. We'll find him."

Your shoulders drop and you move forward, hugging him tightly. He knows you well enough to understand when you placed that mask on to focus and show no fear.

"Thank you dad."

He squeezed tighter.
