They were wearing the cloaks as they entered the tower to rescue Sonya.
There the gang found Sonya chained up.
They also saw Shang Tsung standing in front of her, begging her for a challenge.
Inside the castle tower, Shang Tsung challenged Sonya to fight him, claiming that her refusal to accept would result in the Earthrealm forfeiting Mortal Kombat.
This was, in fact, a lie on Shang's part.
All seemed lost for Earthrealm until Kitana, Liu, Serena, and Johnny appeared.
Kitana berated Shang Tsung for his treachery to the Emperor as Sonya was set free.
"And for that, how dare you send the curse upon me and drift my father from seeing me growing up? You had gone too far, Shang Tsung. Your game is over! Remove your curse and give me back my friends and family!" Serena demanded.
He smirked. "Then I challenge you in Mortal Kombat!"
"No!" said Liu
"Huh?"
"You'll fight me! I am Liu Kang, raised by the Shaolin Monks. You will pay for my brother's death I challenge you in Mortal Kombat!"
With that, Liu Kang removed the cloak, revealing his shirtless abs.
