I unlocked the door to our small, two story home and threw my keys down on the couch.
Sam followed in behind me, looking at the family pictures as he passed.
"It's just you and your mom?"
I nodded and got myself a water from the fridge.
"Yeah, my dad didn't stick around too long after I was born. Do you want one?"
Sam nodded so I tossed him a water.
"I never had much of a father either.."

I didn't want the subject to get too depressing so I quickly changed it.
" I know it's only four something but I can make the pizza now and then we can work on our art assignment upstairs."

Sam sat down at one of the stools at our bar.
"Yeah that sounds good"
I got out the dough, pizza sauce, cheese, and pepperonis.

"Look at you, being all chef like and what not"
I laughed at Sam idiocy and struggled to get the cheese bag open.
"Here let me help."
He came around the bar until he was next to me at the counter. He reached around my shoulders and put his hands on top of mine, pulling to open the bag.

I let out a deep breath when he backed away.
He made my heart beat multiply and I couldn't figure out why.
"Thanks.."
Sam and I spent about 10 minutes making the pizza. It would've gone a lot faster if we hadn't of thrown cheese and spread sauce on each other's noses.
He finally put the pizza in the oven and we sat down, exhausted from our playfulness.
"You got a little something-"
Sam pointed to my nose.
I looked at my reflection in the microwave. I had sauce on the tip of my nose.

"Here."
Sam moved in really close and for a second I thought he was going to kiss me. I parted my lips and waited.
He gently wiped the sauce off with his fingertip. Our faces were barely inches apart.
What was I doing? Hoping another guy was going to kiss me.
I exhaled "uh, while we wait I can go show you all of my art supplies, so we can get started."

I turned away from Sam and took a deep breath. what was it I wanted from him? I thought this was just going to be a friendship but I wanted him to kiss me.
Sam followed me up the stairs to my room, in the corner I had shelves lined with supplies.
Anything from pencils to India ink to water color paints.
"Wow.."
Sam sat down and started going through my things.
I placed a pillow on the floor beside him and sat down.
"Can I see your sketch?"
Sam intentionally held it pointing away from me.
"Not until I'm finished. But I can tell you that it's going to be beautiful."
"Yeah I looked at your sketchbook in class, you're really talented."
Sam laughed.
"Thanks but it's not going to be beautiful because of me. It's going to be beautiful because it's you."
I smiled and rested my head back against the wall.
"So you said your dad isn't around?"
I didn't want to bring up a touchy subject but I didn't know what else to talk about.

"He is. I just really wouldn't call him a dad. Technically he's my stepdad but I don't even think he deserves that title."

I didn't say anything else about it, I just watched Sam draw and color his sketch. He worked so diligently but almost with no effort at all. I glanced over the paper and took a peek at the picture. I could tell he put emotion into his work. It looked great.

"Thanks for letting me hang out you know, you're the first real friend I've made here."

He spoke without looking up from his work.
"No problem. Thanks for keeping me company I don't think I could've handled being here alone. I just get into my feelings and emotions sometimes.."

I guess Sam could hear the shakiness in my voice. He put his papers down, face down so I couldn't see, and wrapped his arms around me.
"Do you want to talk about it now? "
Before I could respond, an alarm started going off.
The smoke alarm.
"The damn pizza!"
We ran downstairs.
I went to open the oven (which smoke was barreling out of)
While Sam stood on a chair and shut off the smoke detector.
I turned on the ceiling fan before opening the oven door.
"I guess we should just order in" Sam laughed.
I used dish towels and plate mats to fan away the smoke.
"Do you see any flames?"
Sam asked peeking around my shoulder.
I shook my head no and coughed because of all the smoke I was breathing in.
"Here I'll open the door."

Sam ran to the front of the house and unlocked the door.

"Well hey. I wasn't expecting to see you here. First day of school and you're already trying to take what's mine."

I turned around and saw Lucas standing in front of Sam.
