When the clock is 09:45 I get in the car with my dad. It's a shabby old car, but I'd rather take the car than walk as the bus was cancelled today.
I fasten my seatbelt as dad starts the car and we drive off.
I often wish I could drive, but my dad and I decided there wasn't much reason behind me getting my drivers license early when we only have one car. I would basically not get to drive.
I'm facing the window as we drive, even though I'm not taking the bus, it's still EXACTLY the same route as I watch every single day, again and again.
"Lils...?" My dad asks.
Lils... my parents old nickname for me. It still hurts a bit hearing it out loud. Knowing that the woman who first called me that is gone.
I turn to him. "Yeah dad?"
"I have to go on a work trip again this week..."
I sigh, not because I'm sad he'll go away, but because it's yet another week or so of having to do adult chores. I'm tired of obligations.
I turn to the road. "Okay. How long? A week?"
"Actually, it's two months..."
Two months? Like the whole summer?
"They really enjoy taking you on trips I guess" I say confusingly.
"Yeah I guess..." he sighs. "it's an important course I need to do, good things is they plan on promoting me multiple grades up after it!" He continues optimistically.
I turn to him, and give him a slight smile "that's great dad. I'm proud of you"
The drive to my school isn't too far so we arrive pretty much when our conversation is over. I hug my dad goodbye and walk out of the car, I throw my bag over my shoulder and close the door.
Before I even get to the gates I run into Emma, a close friend of mine. Her red hair is practically glowing in the early summer sun, and it seems like she has gotten even more freckles since yesterday. By this point, I'm sure she'll end up as one big freckle by the end of the summer.
"Hi Lillian! Last day of school today! Isn't that exciting?" Emma greets me with a huge smile. I chuckle at her optimism. "Yeah extremely exciting"
We walk to the doors together. "So, you going to the beach party tonight? The one on Castine main beach?" Emma says, her voice slightly serious now.
"I'm not really sure... haven't really given it a thought""Who's going?" I continue. "Practically everybody, everyone from school and probably a lot of the regular people from the summerhouses. You should come" Emma answers.
"I'll definitely think about it" I assure her.
Our paths separate on the ways to our lockers so I tell her goodbye and get to my locker. As I'm getting my books someone taps on the back of my open locker.
"Who's there?" I chuckle. I know exactly who it is.
"A boy"
"A boy Who?"
"A boy who is incredibly in love with you"
I pull the locker door towards me, and surely a boy who is incredibly in love with me is standing in front of me. A 5 11 ft gorgeous blonde boy with the sweetest smile and softest eyes I've ever seen.
"Morning Stephen" I smile before putting my arms around his neck, standing up on my toes and greeting him with a kiss.
We're interrupted by a grunt.
"Guess who's also here, Patrick!!" The voice says.
I pull back from Stephen and can't help but laugh."Hi Patrick" I tell him. "But to be fair, you and Daisy are WAY worse! I can't even count the times I've been third wheeling with you guys!" I defend myself with.
Patrick just scoffs, but I know he finds me funny.
As the clock rings, I say goodbye to Stephen, but not to Patrick, we have most classes together so we walk to class together.

The day goes incredibly slow, and I can't seem to focus at all. I keep thinking about the fact I'll be alone this summer. Yeah definitely not the entire summer, but most of it. People will be home for a while before they all go on vacation, they'll go to the east or west coast, some will go to Hawaii, some to Europe and etc. and then I'll be stuck in that tiny empty house.
Before I know it, it's already lunch, Patrick tells me the rest of our friends will sit in the park next to the school for lunch, so we go there together. "So Lillian, any plans for the summer?" He asks me on the way.
"Not really, relaxing I guess"
He lets out a small laugh. "You're always relaxing, don't you want to do something fun for a change?" He suggests.
"What fun could I possibly do? There's no fun here in this town, that's for sure. And you know my situation at home, the list's not really that long for me Pat" I explain.
Patrick is the exception when it comes to knowing about my situation. His family were really close to mine, especially his mom...
His mom and my mom.
I always choke at the thought of her."What about Stephen?" Patrick asks.
"What about him?"
"You could do something fun with him. He definitely has the funds for that" Patrick suggests with a confident voice.
A wrinkle forms between my eyebrows"I don't know... I feel like a gold digger if I do that. Besides when he first is at home in the summer, he just wants to relax with me you know? Days by the beach, days by the pool, days at the pier."
"I just don't want you to grow tired of this little hole. It drives people crazy, you know that." Patrick says, I was about to laugh at his seriousness before really realising how serious he was.
"It's Good to know you're looking out for me Patrick" I assure him, and he replies with a soft smile.
