When we get to the park all of our friends are already there, Stephen, Emma, Aidan, Jeff, Daisy and Eva. They all greet us before we sit down beside them on the grass.
Everyone is talking about their plans or the party tonight. I just sit and listen the murmurings for a while.
{-"You should definitely wear that tonight Eva!!"
-"you think so? I just feel like it doesn't do me justice, If you know what I mean?"}{-"and then we're travelling from Italy to Greece and I'm SO EXCITED!!"
-"ahhh wish I was you Daisy! We're just going to LA this summer."}{-"Did you hear about the new boy in town?"
-"no? Is he a vacationer?"
-"no, he came all by himself and just started working at the bookshop, he's supposedly like super secretive and stuff."The last conversation draws my attention.
-"How do you know about him?"
-"My mother was informed at the country club, and she wanted to check in I guess, like if he had funds and legal guardians and stuff. But he only told her that he can manage by himself?"The thought of something unusual is very appealing to me. I notice it's Aidan and Jeff that are talking about it, and I decide to ask them for more information.
"Sorry, couldn't help but to overhear. Where does he come from?"
"We don't really know much, but he's definitely not from Maine." Jeff answers me.
I nod. "Do you know his name? Like last name?"
I look up as I'm asking, and that's when I notice Stephen's burning glare.I decide to ignore it. There's nothing wrong with me asking about someone new in town.
"Nope, however his first name is Tyler." Aidan says. "He works at the walkery bookstore in town. He'll probably start talking when he sees a pretty girl like you walk in the door" he blinks teasingly to me as he continues.
"Oh shut up Aidan" I laugh back in return.
"It's true though! I don't even think you have to seduce him to get him to talk!" Aidan keeps teasing me.
"Oh fuck off you hypocrite" I tell him, showing him the middle finger.
Aidan knows he has his way with girls, but not on me man. Not even a chance. We spend the rest of the lunch break laughing in the green grass, the wind blowing in our hair.
When it's time to get back, Stephen nods in his direction, in the back of the group.
"You got a second?" He asks.
I nod."So... wanna come to my house after school?"
His house. The definition of dream house and household."Yeah. Definitely." I smile in response.
I think about it. I did want to check out the new dude. To get a sense of who he is.
"Or, actually. I'd like to stop by the mall first. I need to pick up some stuff"
I lied.
I don't even know why, but I lied to Stephen.
"Oh sure. I'll come pick you up when you're done"
Yeah. Another reason why I don't have my license, Stephen drives me practically anywhere I want or have to go.
We eventually follow the rest of our friends back to the school.
——————————————————————————
When school is out, Stephen drives me to the mall. He drops me off and tells me he'll pick me up in an hour. I kiss him goodbye and he takes off.
When his car is out of my sight, I walk past the mall and towards the town center.
I'm still not quite sure why I lied about checking out the bookstore, but I guess it has something with the glare Stephen gave me at lunch. As if I was plotting something. I guess I just want to avoid a fight. There's nothing wrong with that, right?
The town is pretty quiet right now. This suppose most people are at work. Castine, my home town, isn't exactly the biggest town. It's the kind of town where everybody knows everyone. The population is just about 1000. And that's including the vacationers In the summerhouses.
I make my way to the Walkery. It's this small bookstore, but it's filled to the brim with books. You'll be surprised when you realise just how many books they have filled the store with.
As I walk through the red painted door, a bell rings. The store is so small, I'm not sure you really need a bell telling the workers that a customer has walked in.
I don't immediately see the boy. The counter is empty. I make my way through the maze of shelf's trying to orient myself.
The smell of old paper is unknown, and there's something exhilarating thinking about the thousands of different books surrounding me. The stories and knowledges just waiting to make an impression on you. It's refreshing.
I find myself caught up in my own thoughts when I notice him. A tall brown haired boy, standing on a ladder high up in the wall of books.
I'm practically just standing there staring at him. Not quite sure how to greet him. Before I have time to make up my mind, he beats me.
«can i help you?»
Fuck. I hadn't even thought about what to say. I stumble over my words, not quite sure what to say.
"I.. I uhm... I was just wondering... wondering if-"
"You interested in the summer job here? Is that what you're trying to say?" He suggests, pointing at the poster I'm coincidentally staring at.
'WORKERS
WANTED
FOR THE
SUMMER'I let out something similar to a 'mhm'.
"The big boss is out of the house right now, but you could come back tomorrow at 2?" The boy says while climbing down the ladder."Sure I say"
He reaches his hand out, to greet me.
I accept it.
"I'm Tyler, Tyler Thornes." He says, with a slight smile.
"I'm Lillian. Lillian Roberts.""Nice to meet you Lillian." He says.
"You too" I can't help but smile at his kind brown eyes.
*pling pling*
The bell rings and I hear a familiar voice while still holding this random boys hand.
"Lillian?"
Shit. Of course!!!
I drop Tyler's hand and turn around.
"Stephen. Hi.""I was bored so I thought I would join you. Although I quickly realised you weren't at the mall."
"I see. We can leave now" there's no reason for him to react. It's not like I was making out with this guy.
Stephen holds the door and I follow him.
Before walking out the door, I turn around.
"Bye Tyler"
"Bye Lillian, see you tommorow!"
I can feel Stephen's glare but I just act like nothing.
