Three months later...
Kick. Kick.
I froze in my spot on my couch, feeling the sharp pains from the movement in my torso. I knew exactly what was happening.
Kick.
I put down my magazine on the cushion to my left and brought my hand to my nineteen week bump. I stared down at my belly in awe and I wanted the movement to happen again. I waited for five minutes but there wasn't another kick, making me slightly disappointed but was immediately drowned out my joy.
I picked up my phone and called Dan, too excited to send him a text. He picked up on the first ring like he was expecting a call, either that or he as already using his phone. "Hey Char."
"I have great news!" I squealed a bit too loudly through the microphone.
"Oh, what is it?" Dan started to sound hopeful since recently I have been kinda... bitchy. I couldn't help it, my hormones got the better of me and I snapped at him a few times about the littlest things. Some like him not responding if he didn't hear me or just plainly not wanting to talk that day. We always made up but I told him he would need to learn to cope since this is how it'll be from now on until the baby is born, and still even then.
"The baby kicked three times! Come over right now!" I heard sudden rustling on his end of the line and he was cheering to himself. "Bring Phil too." I heard Phil's name being called and Phil asking why Dan was so excited and where they're going.
"We'll be there in a minute." Dan told me and I hung up, looking up from my phone and staring at the door. It finally fell on me that I was going to be a mother, that there was actually a growing and moving person inside my belly. That in another twenty one weeks I would have an actual baby that has half of my blood. My eyes teared up and I rubbed my hand across my belly lovingly.
"Brooke! Come out here!" I called to my roommate, hoping that she would hear me. I wanted her here to witness this too. I heard her feet padding across the carpet and her door clicking open.
"Yeah?" Her brown hair was starting to fall out of her ponytail and little whisps were falling by her ears. She put her hands on her hips and cooked her head to the side, seemingly at my service. Duke followed her and stared up at me from the floor. He was getting big, he was about as tall as my knee now and he was growing thicker fur.
"The baby kicked, I invited Dan and Phil over so they'll be here in a few seconds." My eyes welled up more and I watched Brooke's face change quickly to excitement and she ran over to my side to sit next to me.
"Oh my god, is it still doing it?" She held out her hands in a "may I?" motion and I took her hand and we waited for another movement. Nothing. About thirty seconds went by and there were no more kicks. I heard running out in the hall outside our door and there was a loud knock, which lead me to believe that Dan was there now. The sudden noise alerted Duke and he shot off towards the door, barking and scratching like mad.
Brooke helped me up from the couch since it was harder to get up now with this big belly bump swelling on my torso. I finally made my way to my feet and walked to unlock the door. Upon opening the door I saw Dan stratching the back of his neck nervously and Phil looking confused a few feet away. Dan immediately walked forward and I smiled up at him with excitement in my eyes.
"What's so exciting? Dan's acting weird and told me we needed to come down here." I motioned both of them inside and wobbled over to the couch again. Dan sat next to me and Brooke and Phil sat across from us.
"Okay," I held both my hands out in front of me, looking to Dan, "The baby kicked!"
Phil's jaw dropped and Brooke and Dan cheered happily. "Congratulations, Charlotte!" he high fived me and we all sat smiling for half a minute.
