Lana emerged from the subway station, her mind swirling with a mixture of emotions. She walked the familiar path to her apartment, her thoughts consumed by the events of the past few hours. As she reached her building, a sleek black car pulled up to the curb. She barely noticed it, too focused on retrieving her mail.
With the mail in hand, she was about to unlock the front door when she heard a voice that made her heart stop. "Lana."
She froze, her hand hovering over the door handle. Slowly, she turned around and saw him. Anakin stood there, looking as conflicted and vulnerable as she felt.
"Anakin?" she whispered, shock evident in her voice.
Without thinking, she walked over to him, her thoughts a chaotic jumble of explanations and apologies. "Anakin, I— I didn't— I mean, it wasn't me—"
He held up a hand, gently stopping her mid-sentence. "Lana, breathe. Just breathe."
She took a deep breath, her chest heaving as she tried to calm herself. Anakin's presence was overwhelming, a mix of familiarity and uncertainty. He looked at her with a mixture of pain and hope. Gently, he reached up and took off her sunglasses, revealing her tear-stained face. His expression softened as he saw the raw emotion in her eyes. Without a word, he pulled her into a hug, holding her tightly.
"How about you explain everything to me upstairs?" he murmured into her hair.
Lana nodded, barely able to speak as relief and gratitude washed over her. They walked to her apartment in silence, the weight of unspoken words hanging heavily between them. Once inside, she led him to the living room, her heart pounding in her chest. She gestured for him to sit on the couch while she nervously fidgeted with her mail.
Anakin sat down, his expression serious. "Lana, I need to understand what happened. Those pictures... they came from your phone. And Tiara... she said you sent them."
Lana felt a surge of frustration and hurt. "Anakin, I swear I didn't send those pictures. I would never do that. Tiara must have sent them to Insider New York without my knowledge. She and Rafe... they must have done it. I found out Tiara was at Rafe's apartment earlier, and I confronted them. That's when I forgot my bag, and they must have taken my phone."
Anakin listened intently, his eyes softening as he took in her words.
"I called you, I texted you... but you blocked me. I was so desperate to explain everything to you, but you didn't give me a chance."
Anakin's expression shifted, a mix of guilt and regret crossing his features. "I was angry, Lana. I thought you betrayed me. Tiara's message made it seem like you were just using me."
Lana shook her head vehemently. "No, Anakin. I care about you so much. I would never do anything to hurt you. Tiara was jealous, and she acted out of spite. She took my phone, sent herself the pictures, and your phone number."
There was a long pause as Anakin processed her words. Finally, he sighed and reached out, taking her hand in his. "I believe you, Lana. I'm sorry I didn't listen to you sooner."
Relief flooded Lana's body as she squeezed his hand. "Thank you, Anakin. I'm so sorry for everything that's happened."
Anakin nodded, his eyes filled with determination. "We'll get through this, together."
