Six weeks had passed since we had set sails, and the crew had lost their enthusiasm long ago. Days began to blend together, and everyday was the same. The first four weeks I had tried to keep my friends excited, but when the sun really began to beat down on me, I was with the rest of the exhausted crew. The past couple of days, there was no breeze, nothing to keep us cool against the hot sun. And nothing to move the ship. We were still in the middle of the ocean, waiting for wind to take us.Most of the crew was lazily played around on deck, trying to find something to help their boredom and make light of the situation. Me and Jim sit at a table in the kitchen, peeling potatoes with small knifes. Long John prepares tonight dinner. The sun seeps in through the window, heating up the room. Sweat drips from each of us, and my mouth hangs open slightly.
"It's been six weeks since we left England."
"Five days since we had a breeze."
"Oh, no. I got the madness! I got cabin fever!"
"I've got it too!"
Me and Jim look at each other, hearing the yells from the deck. We set down our knifes and listen as music begins to blast.
"Cabin fever!"
"I got cabin fever it's burning in my brain."
"I've got cabin fever it's driving me insane."
"We got cabin fever we're flipping out bandanas. Been stuck at sea so long that we have simply gone bananas."
Me and Jim run up the stairs to the deck, seeing a party has erupted. Song fills the air and I can't help but smile.
"Chica chica boom chica chica boom boom chica arriba!"
"We, we, we got cabin fever. We lost what sense we had. We got cabin fever we're all going mad!"
"Grab your partner by the ears. Lash him to the wheel. Do-si-do, step on his toe listen to him squeal!"
"Allemande left allemande right it's time to sail or sink. Swing your partner over the side, drop him in the drink."
"We've got cabin fever. No ifs, ands or buts. We're disoriented. And demented. And a little nuts."
"Ach du liebe volkswagen car. Sauerbraten, wiener schnitzel and wunderbar."
"We were sailing, sailing. The wind was on our side."
"And then it died."
"I got cabin fever. I think I lost my grip. I'd like to get my hands on whoever wrote this script."
"I was floating 'neath the tropic moon and dreaming of a blue lagoon. Now i'm as crazy as a loon."
Everyone dances what seems to be a choreographed number. All singing in unison.
"Cabin fever has ravaged all aboard. This one small vessel has become a float psycho ward. We were sailing, sailing heading who knows where. And now though we're all here, we're not all there!"
I'm suddenly dragged into the crowd of people dancing by Gonzo. I laugh as we begin to dance together to the chipper music.
"Cabin fever! Ah!"
As soon as the song ends, a familiar whistle of the wind fills the air. I smile, feeling the breeze brush through my hair. A feeling I had begun to miss over the past couple of days.
"The wind is back!"
"What are we doin'?"
"What's goin' on here?" The crew seems to snap back into it because of the returned wind. All becoming a bit embarrassed at their behavior.
"I feel like such a fool."
"Yeah, me too. I hope nobody saw that."
Me and Jim quickly rush back to the kitchen to finish helping Long John. We are instructed to help take food to the men locked up. We both carry in trays of bread and cups of water.
"Here you go." Jim says as we place the food on the table next to the cell. "Your bread and water for today."
"But I ordered shrimp scampi." One of the men groaned.
"It's more than you deserve, ya villainous dogs!" Long John fumed, leaning closer to the cell. The men coward away and let out gasps.
Long John pulled away and put his arms around me and Jim. "Oh, kids. By rights, I should be locked up too, for lettin' thieves like them aboard this ship. After what they did to you, Y/n. Oh, it chills me. To think that they almost killed you and your little friends. Looking for some daft treasure map."
"None of this would've happened if i'd have given Captain Smollet the.." Jim catches himself, his eyes widening a bit as he looks to Long John. I lean over Long John to look and Jim and send him a look. "I mean..." Jim mutters.
"What, lad?" Long John pries.
"I'm not really sure I should be talking about this with you or with anyone."
"You mean, you've really got a treasure map?" I sigh a bit. Seeing that Jim had already let out our secret, there wasn't much we could do now.
"Not anymore. Mr. Arrow took it and locked it up in the Captain's cabin." I noted, shaking my head a bit. "You must promise to keep it a secret."
"Oh, don't bother your heads about that. You've only told old Long John." He says, pulling us a little closer with a laugh. "Now, you both run along and do your chores. Go on."
Me and Jim nod and leave the cellar together, looking back to see Long John chuckle and give us a thumbs up.
Authors note:
Another chapter done! I'm really starting to enjoy writing these. The songs are kinda annoying to write, but whatever. I'll be writing the next chapter right after this one. So it should be up by the time you read this. :)
