"Yo Inferno! Anything yet?" I winced at the loud noise in my earpiece.
"Nope," I muttered, continuing my search through the cluttered storage. We were at a high-security building packed with advanced weapons and new technologies. Our mission: find the device Shigaraki wanted.
I sighed and stretched my back, stiff from crouching. The room was dimly lit, with only our flashlights cutting through the darkness.
"Anything, kid?" Dabi's voice echoed as he entered the room, his flashlight casting long shadows.
"Nope," I repeated, sighing again.
Dabi had raised me. While everyone else treated me like shit, Dabi took care of me. He fed me, kept me warm, and treated me like a little brother.
"Let's check over here," he suggested, leading me to another section. We moved silently, scanning the tall shelves filled with crates and boxes.
Suddenly, a beam of light flashed across the room. "Hey, you!" Three security guards spotted us and immediately sounded the alarm.
"Shit, let's go!" Dabi pushed me forward, and we bolted for the stairs.
We ran as fast as we could, our footsteps echoing in the stairwell. Up the steps, through narrow hallways, and finally, onto the roof. The cool night air hit us as we reached the edge, but we didn't have time to catch our breath. More officers were hot on our trail.
The sky was dark and filled with stars, momentarily distracting me.
"C'mon!" Dabi yelled, pushing me off the building. I felt the rush of wind as I fell, with Dabi jumping off right after me. A warp hole opened in the air, and we both plunged through it.
I landed hard on the floor of an alleyway, where some of our men were waiting. Dabi, always more graceful, landed on his feet beside me.
"Let's get out of here," Dabi commanded, his voice steady despite the chaos we had just escaped.
I got up, dusting myself off. "Did you find anything useful?" I asked, glancing back at the men securing the perimeter.
Dabi shook his head. "Not this time. But we'll be back. We always come back."
As we made our way through the dark alleys, I couldn't help but feel a pang of disappointment. "I thought we might find something big tonight," I admitted, my voice low.
"We will," Dabi reassured me. "It's just a matter of time. Shigaraki's got plans, and we're part of them."
I nodded, trying to shake off the frustration. "I know. I just... I want to prove myself."
Dabi stopped and put a hand on my shoulder. "You already have, Inferno. Just keep doing what you're doing. We're in this together."
His words brought a small measure of comfort. We continued walking, the city lights reflecting off the wet pavement.
As we reached our hideout, I turned to Dabi. "Thanks for always looking out for me."
He gave me a rare, genuine smile. "That's what family does, right?"
We entered the hideout, the familiar smell of smoke and metal welcoming us. I knew we had a long way to go, but with Dabi by my side, I felt ready to face whatever came next.
Once inside, we reported back to Shigaraki. He wasn't pleased with the lack of progress, but he trusted Dabi's judgment and let it slide.
"You'll get another chance," Shigaraki said, his voice laced with menace. "Don't disappoint me next time."
Dabi nodded. "We won't."
