We were at one of Akiko's volleyball games, the gym buzzing with energy. The sound of sneakers squeaking against the polished floor and the rhythmic thud of the ball echoed throughout the space. The crowd roared as the teams battled it out, but no one was louder than my wife.
"Go Akiko! Get that ball!" Marinette yelled, her voice ringing above the din. I couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm. She was always the passionate one, whether it was on the court or in life.
"Mari... Blue... calm do—"
"I can't calm down! Oi! Ref! Keep your eyes on the stupid ball!" she shouted, her eyes never leaving the game.
I shook my head and chuckled. Despite her fierce demeanour, she was the love of my life, the one who kept me grounded.
The game was intense, every serve, every spike, and every dive kept us on the edge of our seats. Akiko was in her element, moving with agility and precision, her dark blue midnight hair pulled back in a ponytail that swayed with her every move. As the team's libero, she was the defensive anchor, always ready to receive and pass the ball accurately.
"Nice dig, Koko!" I shouted, my voice filled with pride. She responded with a quick nod and a determined look, her red eyes blazing with focus.
The match reached a crescendo in the final set. The score was tied, and Akiko's team had possession. The ball was served, and the opposing team launched a powerful spike. Akiko dove, her body stretching out as she made a perfect save, sending the ball back into play. Her teammates rallied, setting up for the final hit. The ball soared over the net, just grazing the fingertips of the blockers before slamming into the floor on the opponent's side.
The crowd cheered, and Akiko's team celebrated their hard-fought victory.
"Atta girl, Koko!" I laughed, lifting my daughter into my arms as she ran over.
"Thanks, Papa!" she beamed, her face flushed with exertion and joy.
Marinette joined us, her eyes shining with pride and love. "Ah, I'm so happy for you, my baby!" She enveloped Akiko in a tight hug.
"Ma~" Akiko whined, her cheeks turning pink as she noticed everyone watching.
I chuckled, shaking my head. Akiko was such an amazing, strong, and enthusiastic girl. But even in moments of joy, a shadow loomed over us. The memory of that night, 17 years ago, still haunts me.
I remember it like it was yesterday. I walked into our home, tossing my keys and wallet into the bowl by the door. The house was quiet, a rare moment of peace. I headed upstairs to our room and found Marinette asleep, our babies nestled in their crib. I smiled, checking on them. Still asleep, for now.
I leaned over and rubbed my thumb against Marinette's cheek. She looked so serene, even in sleep. "Mm~" she moaned softly, sighing as she shifted slightly. I kissed her forehead gently. "Sleep tight, my wife," I whispered.
Carefully, I picked up the babies and carried them downstairs to the living room, placing them in the little beds we had set up there. I sank onto the couch, exhaustion tugging at my limbs. "God... I love you guys," I muttered.
Suddenly, there was a crash, followed by a deafening boom. Smoke filled the room, and I was thrown to the floor, pinned under the broken couch. Pain shot through me as I struggled to move. "Shit..." I groaned, trying to push the couch off. I could hear the babies crying, their wails piercing through the chaos.
"Get the fuck away from my kids!" I shouted, using all my strength to free myself. Blood trickled down my arm, but I didn't care. I had to find them. I opened the windows and doors, trying to clear the smoke, but it was thick, choking.
