Spark Plug

This afternoon didn't go how I expected, not at all. 

I reached the docs after about a 20 minute walk, and that was me speed walking because of how excited I was.

In the end, I was a bit early, but that's fine. I was usually early, so not only was I used to it but I didn't mind waiting at all.

But when I got there, to my surprise, I saw Zane and Nate already at the docs.

They were standing next to a small speed boat and talking to a girl with dark brown hair.

"C'mon Cleo, my boat won't start. Just help me out by passing me the tools" he said

She looked reluctant to agree but eventually she got in the boat.

"You know, I'm not good with boats..."

"You'll be fine" He laughed

Oh great.. I was really looking forward to that ride. Maybe I should go see if they need some extra help? it'll go quicker.

"Took me awhile to realize someone stole my spark plug" his tone of voice changed and it left me with a weird feeling.

"So, does it work without one?" She asked

That's when I noticed Zane bending down and starting to untie the boat.

"Nope. No spark plug, no spark"

I ran over but it was too late, he pushed the boat away already and the girl was slowly floating out.

Him and Nate were laughing hysterically, high fiving each other.

When I finally reached them I gave him a hard shove

 "Oi, what the fuck?? That's not funny Zane!"

"Mariana? You're here early. It was just a joke, we're friends"

"This isn't a funny joke!" The girl called back "And also, I didn't steal your spark plug!"

"Listen I was just messing around, really. I know you don't have it Cleo."

"Yeah, and what if I hadn't been here? You were just going to let her drift out?"

just a joke my ass, I'm not stupid.

"She could always swim for it" Nate chuckles 

Zane elbows him hard and I roll my eyes at their stupidity.

"Go help her already!" I cry

"The ropes already in the water, what do you want me to do?"

He sighs and puts his hand on my shoulder

"Listen M, I got another boat just around the corner. I can go get it, come back, help her, and then we can go on that boat ride ok?" 

I quickly push his hand off and glare at him in response

"I've got a better idea" I say, taking a step back, before making a running jump into the boat.

Once I landed safely I stood up, dusted myself off, and gave him the finger.

"What a asshole" I said, sitting down infront of the girl "Cleo was it? are you ok?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. Thanks for all that, but what's the plan? Because now were BOTH stuck here, drifting out to sea!" 

Drifting out to sea? that sounds nice actually  I think to myself and start giggling

She gives me a serious look 

"Oh, right, plan-"

But before I could announce that I don't really have one, another girl jumped into the boat. 

"Just how many people are going to jump in here!? Is this your idea of a rescue???" Cleo exclaimed, but when she saw what was in the girls hand she quickly went quiet, mouth hanging open in shock.

"Is that the spark plug?" I ask, raising my eyebrow.

I couldn't help but smile. Zane got played, and we got a free boat.

"Zane Bennett's a pig, if it annoys the hell outta him it can't be a bad thing, can it?" she replied, putting it back in place.

"We'll, I guess you're not wrong" I laugh

"Thanks Rikki" replied Cleo

she looked shocked

"You know my name?"

"Yeah, I've seen you around school since you arrived. I've never seen you before though" Cleo points at me

"Oh, I'm new. I just started at South Coast the other day."

"We'll, how are you liking the place? I mean, everything besides Zane" Cleo asks 

"You know, its not so bad. And I was liking Zane too until..."

"Listen" Rikki interrupts "I know he seems great at first but trust me, it's not worth it"

I mean, after today I believed her. 

"Some people don't show you who they are until its too late, so honestly, I'm just glad I figured it out sooner rather than later" I said, resting my cheek on my palm and staring out at the water.

Rikki looked at me sympathetically for a moment, as if she knew exactly what I meant.

"Anyway girls, I think its time to give Zane a taste of his own medicine" Rikki smiled, interrupting the moment.

She turned on the boat and started heading back to the doc. 

Once we were close enough to Nate and Zane, she sped up and turned right next to them, splashing water all over them.

All three of us burst out laughing, and Nate looked furious and Zane completely shocked.

"Serves you right!" Rikki called back

Now we were the ones laughing and high fiving each other, I bet this isn't how he expected this day to go either.
