PETER DIDN'T COME to the funeral.
It was raining out and Gwen and I walked together with our umbrellas over our heads.
I looked up at the roof of the church we were leaving and could've sworn I saw him there for just a second.
He hadn't spoken to me since that night, I hadn't even seen him since school that day, so I took matters into my own hands and went to his house.
It hurt. I had lost my second father in a decade and Peter didn't even show up. He, of all people, should've been able to relate.
So I knocked on his front door and waited until I could see him through the glass.
He opened the door and took a few steps so he was on the porch with me.
"Where have you been?" I asked him.
"Hi." Was all he said in response, seemingly avoiding my eyes.
"George died. My second father died." I spoke and he looked down as I went on. "There was a funeral. They shot off rifles and they made speeches."
I had started to cry. This was the second time I had been to a funeral like that.
"Three of my teachers showed up. Even Flash showed up." I sniffled and wiped a tear that was falling down my cheek. "Everyone was there except for you."
Peter reached out one of his hands and his thumb brushed against my cheek.
There was silence between us and I gently grabbed his hand.
He let go of me quickly and sighed.
"Can't do this. Can't do this." He spoke quietly. "I'm sorry. I can't..."
"What are you saying?" I asked, trying not to cry anymore. I was trying to keep it in.
"I can't see you anymore." He told me and it was like he crushed my heart with his own hand. "I can't."
I just stared back at him. I wanted to say something, but I didn't know what.
So I turned to walk away before stopping.
That was the moment his strange behavior clicked in my head and I turned around.
"He made you promise, didn't he?" I asked him. "Something to do with staying away from me and Gwen so we'd be safe? Something like that? Right?"
Peter didn't speak, but the expression on his face told me enough.
From there I stepped off the porch and just left.
I didn't know how to feel, I just know I didn't feel good.

BACK AT SCHOOL, Gwen and I stood by her locker, and I kept glancing over to Peter.
And at one point, I watched as he turned his head and looked right at me.
We made eye contact for a moment, but that was the only form of communication we had.
Then Flash started talking to Peter and I looked away, back at Gwen as she grabbed her books from her locker.
Gwen glanced back upon hearing Peter and Flash, then looked to me. She caught me staring again.
She just shook her head at me and the bell rang.
She closed her locker and the two of us walked to class. I didn't even take another look at Peter as we passed him, even though I could tell he was watching us.
Gwen and I took our usual seats beside each other in class and listened as our English teacher spoke.
"I had a professor once who liked to tell his students that there were only 10 different plots in all of fiction. Well, I'm here to tell you he was wrong. There is only one: 'Who am I'?"
She turned her head as someone, Peter, entered the classroom.
"Mr. Parker. Tardy again."
I looked down at my book as he passed me and sat down at the seat directly behind mine.
"Well, at least we can always count on you."
"Sorry, Miss Ritter, won't happen again, I promise." Peter apologized as he put his backpack down.
"Don't make promises you can't keep, Mr. Parker." She told him before going back to the lesson.
Peter leaned forward in his seat and I heard him whisper to me.
"Yeah, but those are the best kind."
I did my best to conceal my smile as Miss Ritter spoke again.
"Okay, class, open your books. Let's begin on page one."
My smile slipped out and I looked down.
I was definitely going to kiss him after class.
